Death on the C E B and W line near Elyria
A young Avon man, John Webber, was killed when a horse and buggy crossed the Erie, Cleveland and Western electric railway track just inside Elyria’s east limits. Motorman Park Straw could not stop the car in time. Webber and the horse were crushed, with Webber found beneath the horse. Coroner Braman ruled accidental death, noting Webber’s drinking and prior horse activity. Webber, 24, had been working on Avon’s Catholic church and was returning home after shopping in Elyria. The incident also involved Charles Wilson of North Ridgeville, who tried to pass ahead of the car. The other horse's driver and witnesses provided statements as to the sequence. the second horse escaped, was secured, and the injured animal was kept at Ensign’s stable. Additional note mentions a man named Alan killed west of Norwalk, and an Elyria Lumber Co. ad appears at the end.
