The July 19 wreck on C and 8 W road claimed a second victim Sunday night. William Gibbons, 41, of just west of Pittsfield, died at Elyria hospital at 8:30 PM after severe injuries and internal damage led to blood poisoning. Funeral arrangements pending.
On Saturday Secretary Laylin named Henry Dykeman Elyria and J L Van Arman Wellington to the board of deputy state supervisors of elections. The four members include Jacot Meyer Lorain and Chris Ma Dermott Wellington. Dykeman succeeds George Prince Oberlin and Van Arman says himself. A fire at 103 Broadway in Lorain caused by a hot stove pipe threat was checked by the fire department. damage expected to be slight and fully insured.
Three Black youths face arrest after crackpot crap games Saturday night in Oberlin led to a quarrel between Elmer Owens and Chester Durham. Owens threw a paving brick that hit Chester Durham's brother Witham and another brick wounded Harrington. Durham battered Owens, leaving him insensible. Dr. W. O. Bunga operated on Durham, removing skull fragments. both Durham and Harrington are in critical condition.
The B and railroad will dispatch a test car over its entire system reaching this city within a day or two. The probe aims to determine coal and steam power needs for pulling trains and to measure times and track condition. The nine coal cars follow the engine with the test cut behind it.
Two small blazes struck Elyria Saturday. The first near the oond docks required only local response as four firefighters and a hose cart quickly doused the spark. A second fire at Fox Furnace Company’s plant damaged a core oven building due to overheating, with no alarmable loss because crews were unable to reach water.
The Elyria Steel and Iron Co mill will be ready for operation in a few weeks. Machinery is being installed quickly. A full-length overhead crane handles heavy pieces. The mill will produce shovel blanks from old rails and use an automatic stoking system under boilers, achieving near complete combustion and reducing smoke nuisance.
Lorain will host two carnivals this week after a dispute over location and crowd draw. One company planned to pitch along Broadway toward the loop, but merchants protested drawing crowds away. A second company contracted to set up on the south end of Broadway, leading to a rivalry and tense schedule.
The commissioner general of immigration states a large portion of newcomers heading to the United States at about 100,000 monthly refuse to live outside large cities. Many settle in crowded tenements, in filth and vice, boosting city crime and almshouse costs, and current laws cannot keep them out.
A repeat streetcar danger near Lowry's switch was averted when a headlight warned the westbound car driver. He reversed just as a big car emerged from the bridge. passengers were jolted by the crash, the train dispatcher warned, and the cars moved to allow the second car to proceed toward Elyria.
The building formerly used by the City Resturant on Court street has been purchased by Ali Jackson. It has been moved to the rear of the American bourse and will be fitted up for use as a shop.
Edward Murray a laborer on Hazel street working at the C and S W power house slipped while setting a partition and fractured his heel. Dr Hart treated him. In a separate death report, John Robinson's infant son on Clark street died Monday at 4 am after liver trouble. Funeral set for Tuesday at 3 pm from St Mary’s Church.
Mrs Morehouse matron at the hospital suffered severe bruises Saturday evening when her buggy was struck by an eastbound car near Ridgeville. The horse, frightened by the approaching vehicle, reared and backed, forcing the buggy into the car before the motorman could stop. She was cared for at W H Eason's home then moved to Elyria. This horse has twice caused damage to buggies.
Edward G DuBroy died Monday morning at his parents home 948 East Bridge Street after a prolonged illness. A well known Elyria youth aged 20 years 11 months left many friends. Funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 8:80 from St Marys Church.
William B Schilier, president of the National Tube Company, states there is no intent to delay planned improvements at Lorain. The Lorain plant will be hurried to completion while McKeesport work continues. Additions planned for McKeesport will not be erected at Lorain, and progress will follow United States Steel Corporation programs. Rudolph Lothar publishes a new biography of Ibsen with portraits and scenes from his life.
Casimir Reichlin, brother of the murdered Agatha Reichlin, retires as editor of the Lorain Post. Richard Fisher succeeds him as editor and manager. A stock company with 5,000 capital is formed, naming Charles Briedel president and August o Schneider secretary.
