A Dayton grocery shipment to Elyria prompts criticism of merchants who balk at patronizing local firms. The piece argues locals should buy from Elyria merchants to boost taxes and city growth, noting price differences and urging mutual support among shopkeepers.
Mrs. Morgan Junior, a colored 23 year old, narrowly escaped drowning after falling into a six foot deep river near the Cascade Street entrance Monday afternoon. Passersby from Screw and Tap Works pulled her from the water and she was carried to the bank.
The Democratic executive committee refused to accept the resignation of Mayor Volger as chairman. The sentiment was overwhelming and Folger will stand. The date for the convention was to be set.
A tax assessor told Mayor Folger it is outrageous to value a man’s property at a low rate while holding $100,000 in money in bank. The mayor argued stocks and bonds are not taxed as personal property though banks face personal property taxes. If the law were enforced strictly, deposits yielding four percent would be taxed to about three and a half percent, reducing returns to depositors.
The Lorain County Bank won the county deposits contract awarded by the county commissioners on Monday. The bank will receive a 9.63 percent rate.
A Columbus dispatch reports Attorney Adams of Lorain held talks at the penitentiary with BHF Kanteen and D.8 Walker and H. B. Walker, the Lorain bank wreckers brought here last week. He seeks information for prosecutions of bucket shops in Lorain and Elyria. He would not confirm if key testimony was obtained.
D H Eddy the alleged abductor at Birmingham orphanage remains in police custody on intoxication charges. Police chief says no law supports prosecution for the offense. Eddy enticed a boy and girl to leave the institution and was en route to Cleveland when arrested in Elyria. He has about 22 days remaining on his street sentence before it is served.
Prosecutor Stroup calls a special grand jury for Friday. Sheriff Salisbury serves summonses. Doubt lingered over needing a jury for men bound over from justice and mayor courts, but baseball cases prompted the action. Principal case includes Shorty McNulty accused of ousting his wife with intent to kill. Petit jury to convene in May.
The city notes no widespread contagion with no current cases. however an Austin child on Cleveland Street has the disease. Riyria remains largely free from contagious dis. Authorities monitor for any new cases and maintain vigilance.
T W Smith of Baxter Springs a former famed Republican orator and Civil War veteran visits his sister Mrs J Bergy in Elyria. He plans a long tour though will stay only a few days. He aided Garfield in forming Co T 103 u V 1 and fought at Stone River Lexington. He now farms a large orchard in Baxter Springs and notes developments in state politics and oil refineries amid the Standard Oil price war.
Charles Crumby, Lake Shore railroad brakeman, aged about 25, was fatally injured Monday night near East Avenue Amherst. He appeared alive on arrival at the Lake Shore baggage room but died at 11:30. Officials say he fell from a freight train between cars. his body was later moved to W Amherst.
The South Lorain Y M G A plans a baseball team for the season with Ed Murray as manager. A Hambley is captain and If Nourth is an associate captain. Twenty four tried for the team but none yet selected. Nine members of the Y M C A boys class are part of the effort.
Oscar Gotch a 12 year old pupil and Heman Gleason driver were injured when a horse pulling a wagon bolted into the Lutheran schoolyard at noon. The horse escaped after a broken harness and ran through alleys near Conley's saloon. Gotch suffered head injury and scalp wound. Gleason bore leg injuries. The boy remained conscious as he was carried home.
