Amsterdam reports Romania has signed a peace treaty with Germany. The war weary nation, whose population and resources were greatly depleted, agreed to terms yet to be fully disclosed. The accord concluded after intense fighting and near total exhaustion.
A circus visit brought crowds and a lively afternoon parade but delays and arrests clouded the day. Three performers were detained for drunkenness, a peddler was arrested for selling fake merchandise, and a stolen lead horse alarmed organizers before elephants stampeded but were corralled with no major damage.
Four thousand specialists were called to duty in a nationwide requisition dated May seven excluding Delaware Vermont and Arion with registrants to report on May twenty following a directive from General Crowder.
The American ship Tyler was torpedoed and sunk off the French coast. Eleven crew members were killed or drowned according to Marine Virelea.
Maud Broderick is charged with stealing a $650 diamond ring from Howell Jewelry Co. in a Monday incident. W. G. Thomas J. Fleming, a 20 year old Chicago man who “beat” his way aboard a locomotive to New York and stowed away on a ship to France, is listed among American soldiers killed in France. He had passed the physical but was rejected for math it was said he would “do anything to get into the scrap.”
During a Mississippi Liberty Loan stop in Leland Charlie Chaplin rushed from a train to help firefighters at a burning home owned by Mrs. M. F. Cooke. He grabbed a hose and directed water onto the blaze, saving the house. Villagers later learned the actor's identity but noted he acted awfully funny.
Washington dated May 7 reports forty-one casualties. Four killed in action, two died of wounds, five died of discharge, one from other causes, fifteen severely wounded, thirteen slightly wounded, and one missing in action.
The American steamer Tidewater met a German submarine on March seventeenth and after a rousing battle the submarine was defeated and perhaps sunk, the Navy Department reports today.
Seattle May 7 Mine Helen Ely of this city has been selected to sponsor the new United States torpedo boat destroyer to be launched next month in San Francisco. The vessel will be named the McKean in honor of her great grandfather Commodore McKean of Civil War fame.
Washington May 6 Extra shifts of printers were set to work today to supply Liberty Bonds. About 18,000,000 bonds have been printed and 10,000 will be distributed nationwide. Secretary McAdoo announced allotments of all subscriptions in full as Treasury reports total subscriptions near 3.5 billion dollars with more expected before next Monday.
Indianapolis Ind May 7 Plans for a Michigan Trail from the Ohio river to Lake Michigan to aid tourist travel are forming under the Hoosier Motor Club. The old pioneer road blazed in 1836 begins at Madison and runs via Versailles Greensburg Indianapolis Plymouth South Bend to Michigan City. Meetings in cities along the route aim to build support for improving the historic highway.
Chairman Chamberlain told the senate that his military committee would probe the aircraft program to track spending and responsibility. He said no American built aircraft had yet been sent to Europe, though substantial materials had been shipped for assembly.
