The British government handed its reply to the Pope's peace note to Cardinal Gasparri in Rome. The document says the note will be examined in a benevolent and serious spirit.
A Reveille account recalls a August 15 flood in Austin when heavy rain and hail washed away the Reveille office near the courthouse, drowning one man and several animals. A later Cedar street torrent caused road damage but spared the summit.
Chicago August 21 hog market shows choice heavy hogs at twenty dollars per hundredweight, up three dollars from recent days.
Berlin reports the Verdun battle continues with fresh engagements this morning and a stated expectation of a favorable outcome. The draft examination proceeds, with some confusion over scheduling. Judge W W Griffin, named a major in the Judge Advocate's Department, is ordered to report at Linda Vista California on August 25.
Washington August reports Senator La Follette urges conscription of wealth to fund war. He cites minority finance committee plans for higher war tax on profits and incomes, argues government demands war while people seek peace, and notes many draftees protest. He says bond issues aid wealthy interests and inflate living costs, calling Liberty Loan supported by an "iron band within a kid glove."
Bachman Blewett and Woodwa have taken over a Battle Creek east slope zinc lead claim on Ruby Mountain. The six claims include a 6 ton daily milling plant with a 35 hp gas engine and two loop pneumatic hoists, powered by ample water. Ore shows galena and zinc sulphide with silver. mill runs 12 hours daily producing seven tons of concentrates.
Judge Doughty orders attorney Carville and Halo Will Pierney to meet with Carlin tomorrow to pursue an adult case involving a sum of 8.60. The case appears likely to hinge on a disputed event where the outcome may determine the winner’s sentiment.
London reports a third attempt to regain ground southeast of Epehy failed as German assault forces supported by Flammenwerfer were repulsed. Allied troops held positions east of Epehy and near St Quentin, capturing prisoners and restoring lines along the Ypres Menin road during the night.
The Austin Reveille recounts a fatal boiler explosion at the Dalton mine two miles south of Austin last Wednesday. Louis Dyer died instantly, Fred Burchfield died 12 hours later, and Wallace McIntire was injured but survived, with others dazed or injured as debris and fire spread through the recently built tram and ruins. Coroner’s jury investigated the scene, with calls for aid and witness statements detailing the wreckage and escape attempts.
Elko prepares for its annual rodeo starting September 3 through 5 with top riders and famed outlaw horses. Expect new attractions including auto, coach, horse and motorcycle races, and roping contests. Grounds improved and a large free barbecue marks the closing celebration.

Inquests found Dyer died from brain concussion and shock after a boiler explosion at Asiatia Dakota Development mine. He suffered multiple skull fractures, arm and leg breaks, and body contusions. Burchfield died from shock and internal hemorrhages with broken ribs, kidney injuries, and lung hemorrhage. Both men aged 31 and 54, long-tenured in Antind, and married.
Canadians launched an early morning attack around Lens as British headquarters reported vigorous hand to hand fighting in the western outskirts near the mining city. Gray figures pressed forward in a dense haze, and after fierce clashes the opposing trenches saw a last stand before retreat.
W T McNeil argues in the Carson Appeal that Germans in the United States show strong loyalty during the crisis. He recalls an East visit and cites a Milwaukee German American Red Cross donor who says his family is American and loyal to the Stars and Stripes, contrasting monarchist sentiment.
Rome reports over ten thousand prisoners captured by Italian forces in the Sonzo front offensive up to yesterday evening as the great battle continues. War offices describe the fighting as persistent with lines bending under pressure. The dispatches also reflect public opinion views from the Midwest on wartime politics and the I W W and Socialist factions.
Paris Aug 21 German forces launched severe counter attacks to retake positions gained by the French offensive along the Verdun front. The war office says the Germans were beaten back with heavy losses and more than five thousand prisoners taken.
The Humboldt Ruby Santa Rosa forest fiscal year ending June 30 1917 reported total receipts of 50646 with 48133 from grazing stockmen 1573 from timber sales and 94 from special privileges. Thirty five percent returns go to Humboldt Elko and White Pine counties for roads and schools while expenditures totaled 23142 including salaries 16343 and forest improvements 6799. The average monthly payroll was 1362 with most payroll and much of the miscellaneous costs spent in Elko and Humboldt counties.
Mrs. William Englert departed yesterday for San Francisco accompanied by Tom Hunter son of Mrs. Ida Hunter who will enter the military school at Piedmont.
