French Capture German Positions On Verdun Front

Berlin dispatch says French troops gained a footing in Avoncourt Wood and Knools east of it on the Verdun front and forced their way into German positions in Samogaux on the Meuse. French infantry losses were terrible and ten attacking divisions were replaced. The Lens battle area depot southwest of the French mining center is reported in British hands.

Regents to Award Bids for Building at State University

Regents will open bids Friday at 10 in the regents room for an 86000 agricultural building at the state university. Located near the quadrangle between the cemetery and library, the design follows the Mackay school of mines style. Construction will be rushed and basement excavation is near completion.

J Jones Still in San Francisco Hospital

A letter from HL J Jones chairman of the county commissioners reports Jones is in St Frances hospital San Francisco after a kidney injury operation. He has been confined three weeks, improving rapidly though the operation was necessary. Friends hope for a swift return home.

Masons Today Corner Stone for Elko County High School

Arrangements are made for the laying of the corner stone of the new Elko County High School by the 2nd Lodge of Masons of Nevada on Monday August 27 at four oclock PM. Past Grand Master J C Doughty will act as Grand Master and Past Grand Master Matthew Kyle as Grand Marshal with Grand Orator L G Campbell to deliver the oration. Other officers and members of Elko Lodge No 15 A F and AM will fill offices. Thies serve as third ceremony in Elko in recent years. Previous corner stones for the Presbyterian church and the courthouse were laid by the Grand Lodge of Masons of Nevada. A relics and souvenirs box is being prepared by the high school board to be deposited with the stone.

Trograd Aug 22 The German offensive toward the N part of the Russian position between the marshes and the river forced Russian forces to retire southward after limited gains. The far-off neutral area reports the push near the front as the Islans withdraw to safer lines.

German airship raid off English coast reported
