Paris reports the French attacked the Meuse on both banks at Verdun this morning. Initial word indicates the action favored the French across an eleven mile sector as prisoners are brought in and battle salvage is gathered.
State Game Warden C W Grover and County Warden Oliver Fee curtailed illegal fishing near Sidney Trememan’s place. Four men pleaded guilty for fishing without licenses. two youths, Isabell and Thomas, aged fifteen to seventeen, were nonresidents. Jake Austin avoided a fine by a reprimand. deer and sage hens remains found with McKinney. Wardens vow strict enforcement.
An investigating committee of the Southern Pacific assigns responsibility for the Hafed train wreck to Engineer F A Cruise Conductor R J Ewing and Engineer Louis Rasmussen. Four crew members were killed Ed House E F P Griffin T J Dwyer and others. The report cites failures to observe clearance and signaling rules 89 and 99 and notes no recommendations.
In Exmouth England August 2 the miners federation bans representation of the Trittel labor party at the International sectarist conference in Stockholm. The final decision ends a long debate and follows a prior agreement among miners Bonator A. W. Keddle and George Weiland. North Park reports wet weather and large crops in the region.
Washington on August 26 reports Mary Daniels chaired a conference with twenty five or more ship and engine builders to double submarine destroyer production within eighteen months. The secretary said if approved the United States would have more destroyers than any other power, noting destroyers are feared by submarines.

New York August 2 The Norwegian steamer Christin Bors was damaged by fire while tied in a Brooklyn dock. The vessel was heavily loaded with sugar. Another steamer, Uwe Jedbouret, was also injured in the incident.
Carson City August 26 The annual meeting of the state board of equalization opened with Governor Boyle presiding. The board includes tax commission members and county assessors from multiple counties. Fleeting notes say the session may last a week or ten days and that room shifts occurred to accommodate the equalization work. Mr Fletcher serves as secretary to the board, with Henderson and Mente accompanying. A motor trip through Ruby Valley was reported.
Elko County Assessor William M. Weathers married Miss Helen Th. King of Virginia City after a county clerk issued a license. The couple, once discreet, plan a coast honeymoon following a recent state tax commission meeting.
Announcements report Charles Mayer, son of a renowned Elko pioneer, married Katherine Chan in San Pran on Tuesday August 11.
