Daily report notes 2,347 pupils answered the school bells for the fall term in Young America Elkhart with improved facilities and staff. The high school has 214 pupils under Prof McCracken. Central school 646 with 17 teachers. total enrollment slightly above last year’s opening.
Charles Geiger, 13, saved Dana White from drowning after the infant fell from a back porch into a four foot cistern. He jumped into the well without hesitation, keeping the child above water until help arrived and the baby recovered without illness beyond possible rainwater ingestion.
Elizabeth Leders filed suit for divorce from Fred W. Leders in Elkhart alleging cruelty. The couple resides in Goshen and the action seeks dissolution of marriage.
The Winona Ceres Co. machinery and effects arrived in the city from Warsaw. Rev. F. M. Stone accompanied the shipment and will serve as manager of the newly formed operation. The board of directors accompanies the arrival and outlines future plans.
After tonight's meeting the Indiana National Bank will be prepared to conduct its business without interruption.
The township advisory board met in Trustee Grosh’s office to set the levy and appropriations for the upcoming year. J. D. Bristol was absent. H. B. Sykes and Lewis Berkey carried on the business, approving Trustee Grosh’s suggested levy of 83 cents per $100 of taxables.
South Main street merchant John Lusher organizes a reestablishment of his business in the Dennett block at Main and Hickory streets. He has rented the entire two stories and basement and expects to resume operations once affairs are settled with a capital of about $15,000.
Mrs. Sarah Landaw of Goshen died Sunday night after three years of consumption. She leaves husband Ilra Landaw, five children, an aged mother, three brothers Andrew Jerry and Dan Keyser of Goshen, and three sisters Mrs B J and Mrs J J Bach and Mrs George Niswander of Elkhart. Funeral plans not yet announced.
Michael Schricker of St. Louis died at 3 am after a stabbing by Henry Swearengen in South Bend yesterday afternoon. Swearengen took Schricker for a saloon keeper named Haas, with whom a fight had just occurred. Schricker leaves a wife and two children. remains will be shipped to St. Louis for burial.
Mayor Greene assumed the city’s top post without formal ceremony having taken the oath weeks earlier. The move confirms him as chief executive of Elkhart despite the lack of official proceedings.
David Mathews of New Paris area riding with Mrs Norris Galentine and her five year old daughter when a speeding car driven by wealthy M W Berger of Mishawaka caused his horse to bolt. The buggy overturned leaving Mathews with severe hip back and spine injuries. Berger and his wife with EB Sanders and wife from South Bend accompanied him.
Rev. A. C. Anda pastor of the First English Lutheran Church of Goshen preached his farewell sermons to large crowds. He left for Chicago where his family already is and on Sept 1 begins duties as field secretary for the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, traveling to organize missions and Sunday schools.
Weather turned favorable after a week of bad conditions bringing many pleasure seekers to Wawasee. Guests remain at hotels and cottagers stay late this season despite the lateness.
A Goshen man entered a Main street saloon this morning and ordered port and claret. He drank six glasses of wine, two beers, a gin fit and a whiskey float in under a quarter hour, then proposed an eggnog that felled the bartender.
Immel and Hess sold property on South Third street in Goshen to Mrs. Lucy Burr for 2700 dollars. Holdeman will give possession October 1 and may stay in Goshen after the transfer.
Charles McFillen superintendent of the county infirmary oversees a small boiler repair in the infirmary laundry and pump room. The project will cost about ninety dollars.
Mrs. Fannie Bontrager aged about 70 died last Saturday night at her home five miles east of Middlebury after years of drowsy illness.
Sarah A Swihart 29 wife of Walter Swihart died of consumption Saturday morning at her home in Goshen.

Shelhower seeks divorce from Wm E Shelhower with custody requests for two children. Parties married 1889 and separated 1901. Walker Lewis Osborn incorporate in carriage trade. LaGrange circuit term opens with Judge Ferrall. five state and 46 civil cases. Elkhart county includes divorce heavy docket. Licenses filed for liquor by Alderman Bungay Steinmetz. marriage licenses issued to Allan Troyer and Ida Swinehart. Gen Niles returned to Longcliff hospital.
The body found on the Grand Trunk railroad tracks at Mill Creek LaPorte county is identified as Charles McDermott 36 from 210 Green Street Chicago. He left Chicago August 1 for a railway position and his family learned of his death when notified.
The Ligonier jubilee festivities ended when two young men robbed Tom Nelson, a middle aged farmer, of a five dollar bill, 4.90 in silver, a silver watch and chain, and his knife as he walked along the railway track. They were arrested and bound over to Noble county circuit court.
The annual convention of the Turners in the Indiana district concluded in South Bend yesterday with the election of district officers. Delegates attended from Chicago Danville and Louisville as well as Indianapolis Evansville Fort Wayne Terre Haute and other Indiana cities. Paul Melzer of South Bend presided.
Logansport Elks Lodge No 66 has organized the Logansport Elks Company and filed articles of incorporation with the state. Capital stock stands at 25000 dollars to build an Elks home. Funds were largely raised by last June’s carnival, the state’s most successful to date.
Milford undertakes substantial reconstruction after May fire. Nine new brick store rooms, two stories high, are built or under construction. About three quarters of a million bricks will replace the former wooden structures, turning calamity into progress per the Goshen Democrat.
Mrs. Barney Tenenbaum and three children ride in a carriage when a Grand Trunk passenger train strikes it. A child dies instantly and the other three are fatally injured as the horse becomes unmanageable and backs into the path of the oncoming train.
Minneapolis dispatch reports the death of the great pacing racehorse and sire Online 2 04 on Saturday from colic. Former owner Mr Lesh sold Online last spring to the International Stock Food Co of Minneapolis for a long price. Online was valued at $20000 by new owner M W Savage.
Mrs Peter Hughes died of Bright's disease yesterday at the family residence in Goshen. She was 638 years old and had lived in this region for 43 years, moving from Bridgeport Connecticut where she was born.
David Matthews of near New Paris sustains serious injuries when his horse, startled by a Mishawaka driver C B Berger, bolts and throws him to the road near his home Sunday.
Edwin M. Elsea of Benton township sold a registered short horned calf to Harry Galloway of TaGrarze. The calf was only a young animal but brought a handsome price and reflects Elsea’s status as an extensive raiser of thoroughbred cattle.
Elkhart longtime hardware dealer Jacob F. Herman died suddenly of heart failure at his home 307 South Third street. Born 1840 in Newark New York he came to Elkhart in 1872 and built a noted hardware business. Survived by a widow two sisters Mrs Mary Ernst Mendon Michigan and Mrs Martin Port Gibson New York and two brothers D W Herman Burr Oak Michigan and Geo Herman Port Gibson New York. Funeral at his home Friday 3 pm officiated by Rev Frazer with a large assemblage of clergy and a $400 funeral contribution from Father Boeckelmann’s friends.
A silver jubilee celebration for the church overflowed the parish school this afternoon with a banquet for visiting clergy.
A capacity St Vincent church hosted Rev. Father Henry A Boeckelmann's twenty fifth anniversary as a priest with Protestants and Catholics in attendance. Rev J A Ballman preached from Matthew 28 19 20, praising the priest's high calling and dedication in the vineyard of the Lord.
An electric car at 30 mph struck a landau carrying President Roosevelt in Lenox Massachusetts injuring the president slightly with cuts and bruises. Secret Service officer Craig was crushed under wheels and died. Secretary Cortelyou and Gov Crane were hurt. Driver Pratt knocked senseless. Roosevelt continued to Stockbridge after a brief halt as a guard rode ahead spreading word of the accident.
A trolley collision with a landau carrying the president and officials caused multiple injuries and the death of Craig. The president sustained a cheek wound while Cortelyou and Pratt were badly hurt. Governor Crane and Congressman Lawrence suffered lighter injuries. the party proceeded to Stockbridge after attending to the wounded.
Township Trustee Grosh selects 22 titles for supplementary school reading. Complete sets have been shipped and will be distributed to the schools today.
