The Elks carnival closed after a week of fun with orderly crowds and few arrests. Merchants faced a drop in business despite large attendance, while officials plan audits to determine exact profits. About 12,400 tickets were sold with an estimated lodge profit over $200 per ticket, and the car was not yet awarded.
Sergeant Stamp, described as a detective, traced a horse stolen Friday night from Hast Jackson Street to near Bristol. He alerted owner Harry Ansbaugh, who hired a livery and accompanied Stamp to Herbert Bishop’s farm two miles south of Bristol. There they found the animal on the highway about a mile west of Bishop’s home, with the owner to claim the horse.
L Turner is plaintiff's attorney. Spade sold half interest in a cigar factory at Elkhart to Church. The LaGrange circuit court docket for September lists five state cases and forty six civil cases. Nineteen complaints entered since April adjournment. Eleven cases about a quarter of civil actions are divorces. Five cases are on change of venue from Elkhart county.
Fishermen visiting Bass Lake in Starke County report meeting a man claiming to be Harry N. Roach, former private secretary to James G. Blaine. Roach says he left Blaine over habits, hid in the Rocky mountains, drifted to Bass Lake five years ago, and desires to end his life away from the world. He avoids disclosure of his identity and has not contacted relatives for years.
The Sunday Y M C A will abandon regular services on September 14 and Rev L A Stangle will conduct a union and baptismal service. Stangle, pastor of the Adamsville circuit, will lead congregations from Adamsville McKissie Indian Creek and Sugar Grove churches with full immersion baptism performed in the river.
Middlebury Independent quotes visitors and reviews on the Elks carnival parade. Attendees call the parade the flatest failure seen, refusing to return after viewing it, while The Review lauds it as the grandest of its kind in Northern Indiana. Locals doubt Middlebury could not do better in a day.
The State Board of Medical Examination and Registration mandates every applicant leave a photograph to prevent fraud. It notes cases of applicants hiring students to take exams under another's name to obtain licenses.

A well dressed man about 35 approached Deputy Clerk Kinney in Goshen asking for a license. He claimed residence in New York City and a 20 year old Michigan bride, but Kinney said licenses are unavailable in the county. The man then admitted the bride lived in South Bend and said he would try Michigan. Kinney suspected foul play.

At a Ft Wayne diocesan consultors retreat held at Notre Dame the Rt Rev Bishop Alering announced widespread clergy changes. Rev J H Guendling will replace Rev Henry Meissner in Peru Ind and Rev William S Hogan becomes pastor of St John's Goshen and Dunkirk missions, previously led by Hogan, now assigned to Rev Dhe in Hartford City. Rev Edward Houlihan moves from Goshen to serve as assistant priest to Rev Dhe in Hartford City.
Treasury official John W. Parsons backs Pratt street as the preferred post office site in Elkhart, arguing the Beardsley option may be resolved by a verbal contract. Promoters on Bucklen Jackson street face unlikely repudiation, with local property owners prepared to cover the difference.
Charles W. Greenawald, LaGrange hotel proprietor and Elkhart Lodge member, claimed the automobile after receiving 19 of 20 booklets of Elks tickets. He learned the owner’s number and verified it, deciding to keep the vehicle rather than return it. He indicated limited use for the auto and referenced a $500 check offer from a well known citizen.
At 458 feet on the Davidhizer farm west of Wakarusa a flow of gas was reported as several pockets of oil and gas were struck. Elkhart stockholders including E L Arnold W W Sterling and J P Heasley joined the well party as reports praised the crude lubricating oil and the area awaited official confirmation.

Mrs Isabell Bowman widow of Dr William Bowman filed against Lake Shore a 10000 suit alleging negligence for failing to provide a crossing watchman at Mishawaka Lake Shore crossing where Bowman and Noah Judy were killed December 18. Van Fleet and Van Fleet represent her. Judy has not yet sued though threatened. An attempted compromise failed.
The tenth annual Ritter family reunion meets this afternoon at Island Park with about 50 attendees including Louis Lautic Chicago John Couchman New Carlisle Ora Miller Harvey Ritter H Brown Will Mc Manus Lorin Crull Osceola and W H A H Ritter families. Dinner and supper will be served and a business meeting elected officers for the coming year.
The county council will meet next Tuesday to elect a replacement for Charles T. Greene of Elkhart, resigning councilman. The session will cover running expenses appropriations and the tax levy for 1903.
The regular county commissioners meeting next Monday will elect successors to County Attorney Wail Health Officer Ash and Supt. McFillen of the County Infirmary. There are no new items on the agenda. old data will be collected without contest.
Attorney Du L. Bailey of Louisville attended court yesterday over a divorce matter. He represents his sister in law Clara Nelson Hall who seeks a legal separation from Rawis E. Hall. The plaintiff lives in Elkhart, while the defendant's location is unknown.
Clayton Farrell of Mishawaka was named administrator of the late Sylvanus Farrell’s estate and gave a $600 bond. D. J. Troyer was appointed administrator of Elizabeth Kauffman’s estate with a $1,400 bond. The will notes the widow’s heirs as son George A. Rhoades and grandson Lawrence C. Rhoades sharing the estate. Valentine Berkey and Lewellyn Warner testified as witnesses.

Frank Carper and George Milburn withdraw from the county clerk and county councilman tickets. They sent letters to Chairman Corbett of the County Central Committee requesting withdrawal and the committee will fill their places.
The Work Short and Larimer reunion set for Friday at Island Park will draw many from Elkhart and nearby towns and others from Ohio Illinois South Dakota and Michigan. The 1901 gathering had 150 attendees and Rev A M Work of South Dakota is expected tonight with Dr I W Short and Dr S B Short among Elkhart members. Brice Larimer of Goshen, 84, is the eldest Larimer and a son of early Elkhart county settlers. An improvised program will be presented.
State Treasurer Levy raised a peculiar hammer and struck 1 000 one thousand-dollar Indiana bonds, liquidated July 18, at a Huntington meeting of the state board of finance. The bonds had already been cancelled, but the act marked their public liquidation.
Gen Edwin R Niles of Goshen Indiana was arrested at a Grand Rapids hotel at noon Monday for stealing a government mail pouch dropped by a street car. The bag was found intact and Niles was jailed. He is described as demented with relatives in Goshen and Elkhart notified. A former Civil War veteran and prominent attorney, Niles faced the authorities.
Mr and Mrs John Hilbish and Mr and Mrs Addison Watts spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs James Weikel of Elkhart. Frank Curtis joined an Marion excursion last week and reported a pleasant time. Guy Brusman has been ill but is some better. Raymond Trick spent Sunday with his sister Zella Manning near Bristol. Myrtle Ann Curtis takes a two week vacation in Elkhart. Samuel Holtz called on friends in Elkhart Sunday. L H Welter rode a bicycle in the country Sunday.
