Reports indicate King Edward underwent an operation for appendicitis and remains hospitalized. Officials say the coronation ceremonies will be delayed and it may be weeks before he can withstand the strain of public duties.
London reports King Edward has an abscessed perityphlitis requiring surgical operation. The coronation ceremony is postponed with officials noting the king’s condition is critical 48 hours would decide life or death. Public panic followed as news spread and stock prices fluctuated.
In the Commons Lord Balfour said the king’s condition is serious and grave though the operation went well. He declined to adjourn sessions and no coronation date was set. City life slows with rumors after envoys’ Buckingham Palace reception and news of the king’s illness.
