Iowa FHA lends $21 million in a single year

In 1962 the Federal Housing Administration loaned Iowa farm families a record 21 million dollars, the largest 12 month total in state history. Almost half funded operating expenses, livestock and machinery, or debt refinancing, while over a third bought or expanded family farms and a quarter funded farm and rural housing improvements. Director Gene Hoffman noted the long term impact with more than 20,000 families receiving loans totaling 154 million since 1941, with about 95 million repaid.
