Elgin High School expands its curriculum with an elective typewriting course offered by Agnes Crowe who gathered a list of eager enrollees. The class includes beginners such as Bob by Allen Clara Baldwin James Davis Betty Elkema James Gilbert Louis Gilbert Ronald Hoag Elmer Hunsberger Kenton Krueger James Loftsgard Jessie Lyons Gene Schori Kathleen Bieele Victor Topp Erma Bedwinkle and Reynold Strong. Meanwhile Miss Emma Martin of near West Union marries and travels on a western honeymoon. Lehman Hardware reports selling three Colonial furnaces to Hattie McKellar J W Schneider and a church twin set shortly after.
Local soldiers Pfc. Ivan Torkelson of Elgin and Pfc. Ronald Gunderson of Clermont, on extended German furloughs, toured Norway. They traveled Aug 15 from Heidelberg to Oslo by train and boat, saw Viking ships, a 1100s stone church, Nansen’s ship, the Kantiki raft, Oslo City Hall, Vigeland Park, Hollmankolen ski jump, and tried to visit Trondheim but found relatives on an island.
Pfc Ronald Gunderson recounts a multi nation journey from Brennehagen to Copenhagen Malmo Stockholm Oslo and Bergen. He describes ferries trains canals mountains and bridges plus encounters with friendly locals and a 600 foot hotel in Copenhagen. He notes opera like royal sites and a US like standard of living and concludes Norway as the most beautiful country seen.
Wahonka Camp Fire Girls held a regular meeting at Danice Anderson home on Monday Sept 14. Officers elected for the coming year include Roselyn Clark president Danice Anderson vice president Sharon Pinney secretary Judy Larson treasurer Kathryn Knudtson scribe Glenda Wede historian. Guardians Mrs Arthur Lantz and Mrs Allen Anderson helped plan programs and meeting sites. Nine girls answered roll call with favorite school subjects. Lunch and group singing followed. Next meeting set for Sept 28 at Glenda Wede home with Kathy Knudtson scribe.

The September 1 1953 crop report shows prospective corn production down 12 percent from 1952 to 616 672 000 bushels due to dry hot August weather. Oat threshing is poor with low yields and quality. Southern pasture conditions are poor, supplying little roughage. Wheat production forecast at 153 556 000 bushels, down 29 percent from 1952 and 26 percent below the 10 year average. Yield per acre is 26.0 bushels, the lowest since 1934.
The Northeast Iowa Republican picnic date shifted from the 20th to Sunday September 27 at the West Union fair grounds starting 1 30 p m. Free barbecue sandwiches and coffee are promised by the committee with outstanding talent and a prominent speaker planned. At least 500 people are hoped to attend. The program will last about one hour and all are invited.
Mr and Mrs Bernard Loftsgard announce the birth of a daughter at Postville hospital last Wednesday September 9. The new arrival adds to the family.
G W Alderson of Wadena has been appointed Occo Mineral Feeds service man for Fayette county by Oelewin Chemical Company. James Elliott, company sales manager, announced the appointment in Oelwein. Alderson, a longtime resident, is married with two children and chosen for his wide knowledge of local feeding problems and recognition from feeders.
Mrs Ida Halverson learns her son Kenneth Halverson is promoted to corporal on August 10. Kenneth M Halverson is an Air Force trainee with APO address in San Francisco. Milton Ash, 18, of Elgin, completes basic indoctrination at Lackland AFB Texas Gateway to the Air Force. Lackland near San Antonio is described as the world’s largest air force base. His training prepares him for technical schooling and assignment in specialized work. Pvt Gordon T Pollock, 914 West Ave North Augusta South Carolina, updates his address.
