Farm Advice From a Rural Iowa Column
Fall plowed gardens can be worked earlier in spring. Reed canary grass suits swampy areas. Keep dairy cows in condition if pastures run short by feeding grain. Farmers use good incomes to pay mortgages. Four boys in cattle grub control will buy calves this year. Soybeans acreage rose from 1,782,000 in 1925 to 14 million in 1943. September is time to plant peony roots and transplant crowded peonies. Rolling Iowa farms should have wide seeded grassed waterways. Men overseas need early turkey marketing for Thanksgiving. 1938-43 corn use: 40.1% hogs and farms, 23.8% cattle feed, 14.9% poultry, 8.5% horses, 0.6% sheep, 12.1% industrial uses. Conserve and utilize manure carefully. It’s the most valuable by product on the Iowa farm.
