Mr and Mrs Dan Erhardt of Vancouver Washington observed their 50th wedding anniversary on August 14 with family greetings and gifts from relatives and friends. Born in Wisconsin and married there in 1894 the couple moved across states and countries before settling in Vancouver in 1922. They have six of nine children and seven grandchildren. The family planned a dinner and reception, but illness confined Mrs Erhardt to St Josephs Hospital in Vancouver where a four tier cake with fifty silver dollars marked the milestone. Mrs Erhardt is recovering and expected home soon.
Rothlisberger sent the Echo several copies of their shop papers Boeing and Boeing Plane Talks and judging from these their Wichita outfit must be larger than some Iowa cities. Ed Ebendorf editor of Plane Talk Walt says they are having plenty of rain this summer and he and Mrs Rathlisberger plan to visit in about a month.
Guernsey Smith and family attended the Dickens reunion at Alpha on Sunday. Andrew Yearous and grandchildren Glen Robert Lorraine and Barbara Yearous enjoyed a picnic dinner and shower at the C M Wilson home near Elkader in honor of Albert Erickson Jr. Ellen Garity of Maloy visited the Myron Chapman family with Mrs Martha Chapman and Delbert as dinner guests near West Union. Emma Krogness of Chicago and Mrs Ern Meyer joined them for an overnight visit. Fred Burrack Sr of Arlington and Mrs J F Schlumbokim of Oelwein were guests of the Harold Glass family Saturday. Frank Loving of Davenport arrived at the Fred Burrow home Saturday evening and returned Monday. Lois Burrow spent the week with her parents Floyd Frieden and family. Frieden family were dinner guests in the Joe Frieden home Sunday. Progressive Home Study Club met with Mrs Ed Wenger. next month they will meet with Mrs Floyd Frieden. Neighbors and relatives celebrated Mr and Mrs Mervin Hunsberger’s 5th wedding anniversary last Friday evening. Ed Wenger and Allen were dinner guests Sunday with Mr and Mrs Fred Koch near Hawkeye. Donald Page and Shirley were guests in the Herman Larsen home Sunday evening. Anna M Kimball resumed teaching duties at the rural school in Dover township No. 5 near West Union. Mrs Mary Ogle and Marilana and Sarah Ogle spent part of last week with the Hugh Conner family in Rochester Minnesota.
Elgin notes 102 students in high and middle grades and 93 enrolled overall. Six new students are welcome Mary Wood Ramona Butikofer Junior Larson Noel Smith Joyce Gehring Donna Medberry. Five new teachers join, including Helen and Abigail Demo Kathleen Hoffman Leota Cummings and Julia Smith.
The National High School Poetry Association released the book Sermons in Poetry with many poems from U S high school students. Georgana Falb of Elgin daughter of Mr and Mrs G H Falb is among those included with A Perfect Day about gratitude and memory as the day ends.
The Sacramento Valley line, California's first railroad, was a 22 mile run from the state capital to Folsom, inaugurated in 1856.

Renewal applications for A gasoline rations are available at oil stations and garages. The ration board urges the public to secure applications there and mail the completed form with the signed back cover of present A books. Volunteers are urgently needed at the board office.

Lightning has repeatedly struck Lundy farms near Eldora this summer. Last week a John Lundy barn burned after a strike, with stock and machinery saved but the building and a nearby corn crib and hog feeder ruined. Earlier, two Lundy barns were destroyed by lightning.

Mrs. Alice Becker, 82, longtime patient at St Josephs Sanitarium Dubuque, fell last Wednesday causing severe bruises and sprains. X ray exams revealed no broken bones. She is now cared for at her son Louis Becker's home.
