The Elgin Echo Dial is published every Thursday by Strauch and Hermen from Elgin Iowa. It is entered as second class mail matter on September 1, 1891 at the Elgin post office in Fayette County Iowa under the 1852 act.
Elgin State Bank marks a 25 year milestone with the latest bookkeeping and proof machines and micro film storage. The new system will store 25 years of permanent records and daily filings, freeing space and easing storage. The public is invited to an open house Tuesday afternoon to view the facilities and meet staff.
Edna Lillian Hunsberger born January 24 1910 in Clayton County died October 13 at home in Elgin age 45. She attended St Pauls Methodist Church, Elgin High School, Cedar Rapids Business College and worked at Elgin Savings Bank then Elgin State Bank for 25 years as assistant cashier. Survived by parents Max and Mrs Hunsberger sister Maxine and brother Elmer, two nephews and one niece. Funeral services were conducted.
Card of thanks from Mr and Mrs Max Hunsberger and Elmer and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Meyer. Edna received kindnesses during illness. Services held at St Pauls Methodist Church with Rev E G Steinman and Mrs E G Steinman, Leo Grether accompaniment. Casket bearers named. Burial in Elgin cemetery.
The town council of Elgin Iowa passes an ordinance vacating parts of alleys adjacent to Lots 2 and 3 and Lot 1 in Schori's Addition. The vacated alleys are to be conveyed by Quit Claim Deed to Ivan Torkelson for $1 plus deed and publishing costs. The mayor and town clerk are authorized to execute the deed. Passed October 3, 1955.
The Volga Study Club met Tuesday evening in the Lutheran Church for their annual guest night. The Fortnightly Club of Strawberry Point and Volga guests enjoyed the pictures shown by Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Gernand led a European trip report after last summer. Lunch for about sixty followed. Sunshine Club met with Irene Moore. next gathering with Laverle Manson. Members remembered include Jim Thyer Ruth Smith Mrs Wiseman Roy Rinkert Leo Baskett Ann Hoppes Wilk er Bruce Leete Robert Cowles family and Duane Jellings family. Music Boosters met Monday. Karen Barrack of Arlington played accordion and Mabel Holstrom of Hazelton with her daughter played violin selections.
P T A at Volga High School will host Nigerian exchange student Olatunde Abadu from Wartburg to discuss his country and ambitions on Friday Oct 21. Nearby, Rev and Mrs Maynard of Long Beach Calif visit Volga for a week. Sgt Dorry Brooks is discharged after 13 months in Korea. Numerous local visits and family gatherings are noted across Volga and surrounding towns, with several trips to Ames Chicago and Iowa City for family events and hospital calls.
Katie Bartels and sisters from Monona visited relatives including Mrs Ed Montour Mrs Louise Henkes Alberta Rol and Mrs Johan Johananmeyer of McGregor last Monday. Neighbors and relatives from Strawberry Point Littleport Joice and Garnev ille hosted or called on family members through the weekend with many a birthday and anniversary celebration noted.
Mrs Darryl Leonhart visited Mrs Roy Leonhart a Palmer Memorial hospital on Sunday in West Union. Dinner guests at Mr and Mrs Morris Lamphier included Mr and Mrs Willis Lamphier Elkader the Burnell Hines family and Mr and Mrs Delbert Hines Cedar Rapids and the Robert Hines family. Mrs Martha White Elkader called on Mrs Mary Little last Monday.
