Marketing The 1955 Pig Crop Promotes Lighter Hog Marketing
The 1955 spring pig crop is about 10 percent larger than last year and fall intentions are up ten percent. U S Department of Agriculture studies suggest a ten percent pork supply rise lowers hog prices, with hogs at Chicago futures around 14 to 14 50 per hundred for late fall. Farmers can curb supply by marketing lighter-weight hogs, potentially lifting prices and improving lean cut yields while easing high feed costs. County Extension workers nationwide promote the plan and report good producer response.
