Wadena News reports that the Presbyterian Sunday school met Wednesday evening at the church to plan the Christmas program for Friday night December 23 with Mrs Richard Ott in charge of the pageant.

Banquet Honors Luther Leagues at Elgin Church

The Young People's Luther League of the Elgin Lutheran Church hosted a Pocket Testament banquet Monday night with guests from East and West Clermont Highland and St Olaf Lutheran Churches West Union. Make Clean Sweep At Tuesday Election

Our Mayor and Councilmen made a clean sweep at Tuesday's election. There were 47 votes cast and Mayor Schori received 42. For Council the vote was Boyle 46, Capper 45, Dean 42, Fauser 44, Machiethaler 46. The old check voter was present again and spoiled his ballot. It seems they will never learn to make a cross in the square. A check doesn't count.

Bar Association Opposes Minimum Filing Fee

The Iowa State Bar Association told the state tax study committee it opposes a proposed minimum filing fee for state income tax returns. President Henry J. TePaske said the fee is inconsistent with income taxation and resembles an excise or poll tax, and opposed on principle not policy. The association did not judge revenue sources like radio or TV advertising, noting possible constitutional questions. Kent Emery was named first assistant to Atty. Gen. Dayton Countryman, replacing Clarence Kading. Emery’s salary rose to 7500 dollars, and he began November 1.

Two Iowa colleges name new presidents in recent days

Fairfield Parsons college names Dr. Millard G. Roberts 37 as its 15th president, a former Presbyterian pastor and Oneonta N Y native who served as World War II air force chaplain. Grinnell College will inaugurate Dr. Howard R. Bowen as its seventh president, with Henry A Wallace and Joseph N Welch among speakers during the Iowa Farm Bureau convention in Des Moines. Also, state Rep William Denman says AG ruling suggests emergency speed limits set by Highway Patrol and Safety Commissioner were illegal, though legislature holds power to declare speed limits.

Helms brothers buy Hereford sire at Kansas sale

H W and Robert Helms attended the Frank Condell Hereford cattle sale in Eldorado Kansas. They bought the Ufth bull Zeta Hell delivered to the Helms farms last week. The sale featured forty bulls with the first five selling to five states and an average price of just over 1100 dollars. Helms family holds a prominent position in purebred Hereford breeding and continually adds new blood lines.

Farm Commodity Price Index Drops in Mid October

The index of prices received by Town farmers for all farm products fell 12 points or 5 percent in the month ending October 15, reaching 221 percent of the 1910-14 base. It marks the lowest monthly all farm products index since June 1946, with sharp drops in corn and livestock prices driving the decline. Hog prices fell $1.20 per cwt, beef cattle down 90c, lambs 30c, sheep 10c, eggs down, calves up 90c, and whole milk up 10c per cwt, butterfat unchanged.

Tertia Club Meets Discusses China and Plans Holiday Events

The Tertia Club gathered November 7 at Mrs. Don Fauser’s home with all but one member present. Members shared gratitude, heard a Chinese cookery article by Mrs. Clifford Gisleson, and a Chinese customs report by Myrna Lane. Presiding officer Mrs. Russell Larsen noted ideas for next year’s projects and items were received for blind women towels. Members agreed to bring a small toy for Woodward State Hospital retarded children and plan a cooky exchange and Christmas gift events at the December 5 meeting hosted by Mrs. Russell Wenger with Mrs. Ivan Torkelson assisting.

Ralph Olson to Speak at Monona High School

Ellsworth farmer and business man Ralph Olson will speak at Monona High School Monday evening November 14 at 8 00 o clock.
