Elgin Iowa newspaper published weekly on Thursdays by Strauch and Hermen. The paper appears to have second class mail status since September 1, 1891, at Fayette County post office under the 1852 act.
Subscription rates two dollars per year for four Northeast Iowa counties two fifty per year for all outside territory payable in advance. Advertising rates Readers per line zero cents want ads ten cents per line minimum thirty cents per week with cash. otherwise sixty cents. Blind ads inquiries three cents per week minimum. Cards of Thanks one dollar In Memoriam one dollar. Obituary poetry and resolutions of respect when admission is charged follow regular rates.
A collection of humorous quips and anecdotes about football crowds and small misadventures. Jokes touch on cow bells at games, moving pianos, a Navy recruit, marital woes, child wit, and everyday mischief. Reads like a light local humor column.
A little over 700 dollars was raised by subscription to gravel a local road from Schori corner east to Henry Frieden corner and to the county line. Mr and Mrs T W Dean and Mrs Ziba Tripp visited Brawley California to see Mr and Mrs James Bailey. Elgin Baptist Sunday School sent a delegation to a Arlington S S convention. Attendees included Mrs Milton Miller Mrs Guy Probert Edna and Clara Miller Wilma Schaer Metta Buser Helen Baechler and Mabel Rennison. Mr and Mrs Walter Falk travelled to Cedar Rapids to visit his sister Mrs Sullivan. Clara and Edith Holzer stayed with Ruby Bark at Chas Medberry’s home.
A river cave at Beulah Falls near Beulah Falls picnic area between McGregor and Monona has been discovered and may open to the public. Explorers Gerald Mielke and James Hohman blasted into a bluff 60 feet to uncover a 12 foot wide river running through a 50 by 75 by 36 foot chamber with a waterfall and six additional rooms connected by passages. They secured a 99 year underground lease on 235 acres and an above ground lease of the Beulah Falls site from landowner Benjamin Lestina.
The Iowa State College Veterinary Medical Research Institute in Ames isolated an agent linked to infectious atrophic rhinitis in swine, a disease first seen in Iowa herds in 1948. This discovery could lead to control methods, easier recognition, and sanitation and culling as disease management approaches. The report also notes the nation's hens averaged over 13 eggs per hen in September, above the 10-year average.
A discussion of shifting teen interests from future careers to hobbies shows both continuity and change. Case studies note a boy moving from air force dreams to business, a girl transitioning through various activities to homemaking, and a twelve year old whose endless projects mature into a productive partnership. A fragmented OCR list shows multiple names and locations with bushel amounts such as Steve Donion ikader 126.95 bu and Elmer Heiden 121.42 bu from Strawberry Point 112.13 bw to 103.83 bu, plus Carl Voelz Gusna 99.20 bu Eldon Fenton Strawberry Point 97.21 bu Tilpher Bilden Elgin 9256 bu and Reuben A. Hoth Luana 90.10 bu, indicating a partial grain tally across several farmers and towns.

The Marion Mission Society will meet Thursday at the church parlors with hostesses Mrs Olvin Olson and Mrs Maurice Landsgard. Visitors include Mr and Mrs Millard Mork Doc and Mattie Bownds of Odessa Texas who were guests at Mollie Mork's home last Thursday and Friday and again for dinner Sunday. Mr and Mrs Robert Mork and Roger of Monona joined afternoon visitors Mr and Mrs Mervin Anderson.
