Washington May 29 The United States Supreme Court handed down opinions on insular possessions and taxation in Puerto Rico. It ruled Porto Rico was not foreign territory at the time of duties, upheld some post occupation duties, and declared the Foraker act decisive for revenue collection. Justice Brown authored the major opinions with dissents from several justices.
At the Richmond mine near Dayton, two miles from town, a coal dust explosion killed twenty one white miners, many with families. A misfired blasting charge ignited accumulated dust, igniting flames that extended 800 feet. Fourteen others escaped or were burned as roofs collapsed. rescue teams removed bodies to Dayton amid grieving crowds.
The Presbyterian general assembly in Philadelphia voted unanimously to adopt the special committee on the revision of the confession of faith after a four day debate led by Rev. Dr. James D. Moffat. Moffat's amendment instructed a future assembly to draft a brief statement of Reformed Faith for clarification, not as a substitute for the confession. New York will host the next assembly.
Alford Hughes, jailed in Louisville, asks Kentucky courts to rule if stealing a woman's heart counts as grand larceny. He claims only securing Mrs. Mattie Renison's promise to marry him, after a broken engagement, was his deed. Renison is a wealthy Shepherdsvile widow. Hughes says he never touched her money.
Judge Kohl sentenced Albert T. Dow of Chicago to the heaviest U S district court penalty, a 10000 dollar fine and jail term, for operating an illicit oleomargarine plant at the Fertile Valley Creamery. Dow pleaded guilty to the illicit dairy product operation.
In Veroni reports a young blacksmith Pietrucci attempted suicide after revealing he joined an anarchist society and was chosen by lot to kill the German emperor. He preferred death to the act and named comrades tied to plans against Queen Helena of Italy, President JAun of France, and the tsar of Russia.
A terrible two-car electric streetcar crash near Greenbush two miles from Albany killed at least one motorman and seriously injured many others. The south-bound car attempted a second switch, colliding with the north-bound car at a curve, tearing both cars to splinters and turning the post office area into a crowded scene of wounded and dying. Ambulances and doctors rushed to Albany as survivors pulled victims from twisted wreckage.
