Two women perished in a New York Department House fire. Ashland Maine mill, a large sawmill, burned with over 200000 loss. The body of Mrs Salon Frobinson found in her home ruin in Jocho nv ille Pa.
Emily Weeks of Albany is accused of throwing carbolic acid at her mother to cover up forging her name to checks. She reportedly confessed to Jesse R. King, who shot his bride of two months and killed himself when an officer tried to arrest him. The piece also mentions other court and public figures and a violent incident in Edwardsville Illinois.
President McKinley rushed his wife to San Francisco from Del Monte after a sudden illness. Mrs McKinley was moved in a steam chair to Henry Scott’s home for rest and medical consultation. Secretary Cortelyou said no alarm, but observers noted she appears ill and the president may alter plans if her condition worsens. Dr Rixey said she withstood the trip well and will stay about a week to ten days for recovery.
A single open trolley car rollercoastered down a steep incline near Port Lee New Jersey injuring more than a hundred passengers. Fireman and conductor Frank Bunatruck suffered suspected internal injuries while J J Robinson and his wife were seriously hurt. Most riders were bruised and one may die. The car failed to stop before a sharp curve at the hill’s foot causing a catastrophic crush as bodies were dragged under the frame.
Philadelphia on May 14 Dr Thomas Eldridge was arrested charged with conspiring to kill his wife Police say private detective Paul Schroeder reported Eldridge hired him to obtain letters from his wife who had left him Schroeder claims Eldridge asked for morphine to be injected and threatened dynamite to blow up the house where Mrs Eldridge lived

Archbishop John Travers Lewis of Ontario died aboard the steamship Menominee en route to England. Born in 1825, he had recently been in New York before the voyage. The report notes his death occurred at sea on May 16 near Liverpool.
Grant Tower Illinois May 18. The steamer Paduesh sank in twenty five feet of water at 9 50 Sunday night after striking a snag while backing from Brunkhorat landing. Five passengers drowned with fifty missing. Most officers saved. First Mate Tobtam Royal of St Louis reports twelve passengers aboard, all but two saved. Bodies recovered include Dr J W Bell of Gell's Landing Tennessee and a young woman with card Mrs Harry L Allen of St Louis. A diver searches for the missing. only hurricane deck above water. Survivors fled down river to Grand Tower hotel. Rev Mr Block, a Jewish rabbi, sheltered seven survivors.
President McKinley returns from San Jose to care for Mrs McKinley at Scott residence and plans a curtailed tour including Palo Alto and San Mateo. Thousands in San Jose hoped to see him though the visit sparked sympathy as cabinet members continued the trip with plans altered.
The transport steamship Hermes from Buenos Ayron struck Blauwberg beach after a blow from a Sunday night gale at Table Bay. All passengers and crew were saved except two women who drowned. a rocket apparatus aided the rescue.
