Memorial Day observations planned by Elgin Legion
Fayette county will mark Memorial Day with a program led by the Elgin Legion and Auxiliary. A May 30 observance includes an 8:30 a.m. band concert, opera house closing ceremony, Wyria quartet, and a procession along 6th Street. Rev Ph Lauer to deliver benediction as veterans are honored. Everyone is invited to attend this annual commemorative event.

George Neuenschwander Dies in Iowa City
George Neuenschwander, a hardware dealer from Castalia and former Elgin resident, died at University Hospital in Iowa City on Friday morning May 20 after months of illness. He was 64. His body was moved to the Albert Schori home in Castalia for funeral services conducted by Revs. Dirks and Snyder, with burial in the family cemetery. A life sketch will be published in a later logue.

Western Stars Attend District Meeting in Charles City
Mrs. Arthur Herrling of Wadena and Mrs. L F Klingman represented the local Western Stars at the district meeting in Charles City last Thursday. Herrling served as driver while Klingman officiated as organist and Herrling read a presentation and gave gifts to visiting grand lodge officers during the program.

Fox Road crew makes rapid progress on Elgin West Union road
The Fox road crew has worked about two weeks on the Elgin West Union road from the O'Brien farm eastward. They have nearly completed cuts and fills up to the hill at the former Christ farm, a distance of nearly two miles. Heavy work remains on the lime kiln hill where rock must be cut and moved using a drag line expected to operate this week.

Elgin Farm Fire Out Near West Union
Fire department was alerted Monday about 6 30 pm to a miller home near Elgin and West Union but reached the Brackin residence to find the blaze extinguished. Reports say a kerosene spill on live coals in a cook stove caused an explosion. Road crew assisted in stopping further damage. Mary Carpenter of Fayette visiting her sister Mia Schori.

Class Night Exercises Draw Large Crowd
The class night exercises drew a very large crowd this year, mainly because it was held in the evening instead of the afternoon. The seniors presented a fine program including Salutatory by Kathryn Strauch, Valedictory by Frieds Miller, Girls Octet, class statistics by George Anderson, and several performances featuring Clara Baechler, Margie Christ, Lola Hanson, and others. Supt. L. B. Carter announced class honors and Oluf Olsen presented remarks. An one act play Wanted a Cook featured Clara Baechler, Margie Christ, Lola Hanson, Alice Hanson, Frieda Miller, Kathryn Strauch and Phyllis Kohler. Phyllis Kohler delivered Class Prophecy and Kohler led the Class Song.

Elgin High Graduates In Rocky Road Of Life
Sunday at Elgin the Hawks defeated Hawkeye 14 to 6 as Elgin exploded for eight runs in the second inning and added ten more in the later frames. Gehring pitched all six innings for Elgin, fanning twelve while Hawkeye’s staff walked four. The ceremony closed with 21 graduates and Dr. A E Bennett delivering the commencement address, praising perseverance and the motto Climb Though the Rocks be Rugged.

Town jail again moved to fire station room
The town council moved the jail for the third time this year from city hall to the fire truck housing room aided by Will Christ and C J Harrington. The heavy steel cell made the move a considerable job but officials hope this location will not require another move soon.

California to Elgin Driving Record Set in 66 Hours
Mr and Mrs Harold Neuenschwander and Charles Neuenschwander established a new driving record between Los Angeles California and Elgin, driving a little more than 2000 miles in 66 hours. They left Los Angeles at midnight Friday and arrived in Elgin at 8 AM Monday.
