Farm and crop notes Iowa 1936 outlook and yields
Farm wages on April 1 reached the highest since 1931 while the Argentine corn crop undershot expectations. Iowa reports more sheep farms, over 3,300 acres of certified hybrid seed corn, and cash farm income in March at 518 million dollars, up from 429 million a year earlier. Sudan grass pasture seeding should start May to mid June, seed at 18 to 20 pounds per acre. Iowa corn yield tests set a record with 1,080 entries across four state sections, the 17th year of the test. Soil building practices expand for 1936 Class II payments. Strawberry crop prospects look good if mulch is kept, with weed control emphasized. A farm program aligned with soil conservation seeks to stabilize production, encouraging proper rotations and postive support for farmers. Early breeder selection advice for poultry suggests evaluating 8 week old males to choose 10 top birds for next season. Some Iowa locations still lack grade eggs.
