Variation in Per Diem for County Supervisors
A survey by the Iowa Taxpayers Association shows wide variation in per diem pay among supervisors in populous counties. Supervisors are paid only for days in session or performing committee work, now $14 daily. Average days claimed last year range from 318 in Clayton County to 104 in Buena Vista and Pocahontas. An Attorney General opinion (1948) said road work should be done by engineers and supervisors focus on policy, but county day labor crews encourage supervisors to direct committees and collect per diem. Fallout note says health officials monitor radiation levels without alarm. Judicial reform section reports AFL-CIO opposition to a constitutional amendment on judge selection to be decided June 4. Attorney General rules on primary election procedures include eligibility of independent voters and ballot handling.
