A Friday evening surprise house warming honored Mr and Mrs Reuben Schupbach. They shared lunch and a social evening. Attending were Mrs Bertha Lehman, Mrs Anna Schupbach, Ruth and Lena Schupbach, Mrs Sarah Schupbach, Mrs Louis Lehman, Mrs Marie Butikoffer, Ruth and Shirley, Mr and Mrs Gottlieb Pulfer, and Mrs Fanny Frieden and Ide.
The week of May 21 to 26 has been set for Mailbox Improvement Week urging patrons to check boxes for proper erection and maintenance to ensure efficient delivery. Postmaster McMillan asks residents to paint or inscribe their name and number on the visible side and to group boxes in residential areas to reduce stops.
Margaret Barrowman Woodle was born on July 28, 1274 at a unspecified locale, later deemed a notable figure in local records. The fragmentary notice notes her birth and hints at an obituary context, with limited remaining details on family or passing.
Green River Illinois native moved with family to Lehigh Iowa in childhood. Married William A. Woodie in Lehigh on May 31 1893. Lived in Des Moines Elgin Fayette and back to Des Moines with daughter Hazel. Husband died 1936. Survived by daughter Hazel Boleyn of Des Moines granddaughter Joan Crandell of Oelwein two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Interment in Elgin Cemetery. Casket bearers James Crandell Louis Dennler Melbert Meyer Charles Oelberg Thomas Pollock Paul Crandell.
The Illyria Farm Bureau Homemakers plan their May meeting on May 18 at 1 p.m. at Wadena Park with a cookout. Attendees should bring their own food to cook over a fire. coffee and dessert are provided. All are welcome to attend.
The confirmation class of May 12, 1912, of Marion Lutheran Church Gunder held a fiftieth anniversary reunion on May 13 at the church. They attended worship, presented hymnaries, then shared dinner and fellowship. Of 17 original members 15 attended including Mrs Gilmen Enutson Renner South Dakota and others. two members were absent. Relatives and friends joined the event.
A surprise Thursday afternoon birthday and bon voyage party was held at Bernard Hanson home for Mrs Harold Opland who sails for Norway on May 2. Guests included numerous local residents from Postville Farmersburg Hawkeye Guttenberg Decorah Oelwein Elgin Clermont and Clermont with several couples attending from Decorah.

William Henry Brackin, born April 18, 1878 on the Brackin homestead west of Elgin, died May 10 at Postville hospital at 89. He lived with brother B. H. Brackin, moved to Elgin in 1945, cherished children Joe Dorothy Andrew and Mary Frances, enjoyed music and sports, and valued his bicycle and memories of attending girls basketball games.
An elderly resident born in 1896 endured frequent moves and long journeys, riding daily until heavy snows halted him last autumn. Health declined through winter, cared for by sister-in-law Mrs Inez Brechin, transferred to Postville Community Hospital, and later laid to rest after last rites at Muehlethgler Funeral Chapel and St. Pauls Church. Burial in West Union cemetery followed with casket bearers Harold Raverson, Charles ONeill, Leo Falk, Thomas Pollock, Doic De Sart, Louis Dennier.
The Clayton County Extension Calendar lists events from May 17 to May 25. On May 17 a Soil Conservation District Commissioners speech contest occurs at 9:30 am at St Mary school in Guttenberg. May 18 features a 4H leaders meeting at Elkader extension office at 8:00 pm. May 19 hosts a Lucky Clovers 4-H record hop at Strawberry Point school. May 25 includes a Family Living Committee tea honoring Clara Sutter.
A municipal event in Elkader features Louise Roenefeld as the speaker at 1:30. The visit or talk targets local residents and officials, with Roenefeld addressing civic matters and community concerns.
On Saturday May 1 the 4-H purebred Holstein heifer calves were scored. Clermont Comets 4-H club meets with Lyle Janice Marilyn and Stanley Anderson. On Monday May 21 Fremont Jr Farmers 4H club meets with Michael and Jerry Holtz. Scott Hot Shots 4-H Club meets with James Larry and Jeannie Mossler on May 21. Tuesday May 22 follows.
Two youths were involved in an incident reported in a local brief. Police described unusual behavior observed during the late night to early morning period. Authorities investigated and filed a preliminary statement noting no injuries.
A 4:00 am water incident at H. D. Yack residence involved a hose left on by two youths. Water gushed into the basement before a resident noticed the act and identified one assailant. Local notice mentions upcoming services on Sunday May 28 and community events led by Mrs. Ruth Boyte and St Theresa Circle.
