Buckwheat as a green manure and field improvement
Buckwheat serves as a green manure by providing rapid growth that decays quickly, forms humus, and loosens hard soils. It is used with rye on poor land, with rye growth held by buckwheat until harvest, then plowed under in spring. Used repeatedly, it improves soil readiness for legumes, though buckwheat itself does not add nitrogen.
After the pigs are weaned pasturing and grain plan
After weaning, pigs should go to pasture with a small grain portion. Sows two years old or more that have weaned spring litters and are not bred for fall farrowing may be sustained on good alfalfa or clover pasture without grain for two or three months. Very thin sows and gilts weaning their first litters should be isolated, fed on pasture, and given a liberal grain ration. The thin sows often gain rapidly and can be moved outdoors in a month. Gilts should receive some grain throughout the period between their first two litters.
