Maine’s Biggoat Tree Jay Maine’s largest elm measures 7 feet dia
On the Androscoggin riverbank near the late Dudley Bean’s lawn stands a remarkable tree. Four feet above ground the circumference is 2 1/2 feet and the trunk is seven feet in diameter. From about seven feet up seven branches radiate, each 18 to 24 inches thick, spreading 270 feet around. A band stand for 25 sits where branches depart. A Boston visitor, astonished by the size, said if it were on his lawn ten thousand dollars could not buy it. The tree was planted 43 years ago by Lafayetta Bean before leaving for California.
