Kingston Jamaica April 1 Seized by a Spaniard The American schooner Hester of Pensacola Maine arrived with limber. Her captain reports a Spanish gunboat towed the steamer into Callades and detained her for three days. He notified the United States coast guard.
A palace notice reports Calabazar Encruel and Sonlo in Santa Clara Province under Captain Barabi surprised a guerrilla party. The insurgents left three killed on the field and one captured. The government says one of the troops was killed and five wounded.
California Volunteers in San Francisco form the first company under April 1, with 79 men on the roster and an application to be enrolled for service in the event of war with Spain.
