The Elgin Echo Dial acts as a weekly Elgin Iowa newspaper published every Wednesday by Hermen and Bartuner. It is entered as second class mail matter on September 1, 1891 at the Elgin Fayette County post office under the 1852 act.
Subscription rates set at 2.50 per year for four NE Iowa counties outside the territory. 3.00 per year for those outside above territory with 50 cents extra for both zones if not paid in advance.
Advertising rates listed per line for want ads and notices. 10 cents per new minimum, 30 cents weekly if cash with order, 50 cents minimum otherwise. Blind ads and inquiries 50 cents weekly. card of thanks and in memoriam 1.00. Notices limited to 16 lines, extra lines cents. Resolutions of respect and obituaries charged at regular rates.
Funeral services for Alfred Jacob Martie 67 of Monona were held Tuesday at 1 20 PM at St Paul’s Ey Lutheran Church with Rev R E Langholz officiating. Burial followed in Monona City cemetery with American Legion providing military rites. He died suddenly at home Saturday Feb 16 at 7 30 PM from a heart attack after a period of ill health.
The obituary notes Martie Martie born February 18 1895 in Marion township to Joseph and Caroline Peter son. He was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran St Olaf in 1912 and educated in Clayton county rural schools. A WWI veteran, he married Priscilla Nelson December 23 1920 and farmed before moving to Monona in 1931. He joined St Pauls Ev Lutheran Church and is survived by his wife four brothers a sister and a granddaughter. Pallbearers and music details are listed with attendees from Osage Cresco Blooming Prairie and other towns.
Carlson Scott of Bagley Wisconsin born July 16 1895 died Friday March 1 Funeral services held Sunday at Bloommeton Methodist Church He was brother of Mrs Clive Helms and a frequent visitor at the Helms home Attendees included Mr and Mrs Clive Helms Mr and Mrs Richard Frieden Mr and Mrs Milton Miller Mrs Marshall Helms Mrs Charles Strong and Robert Helms
Forty nine Iowans attending Luther College Decorah were named to the first semester honor roll. Students with a grade point of 3.0 or higher for at least 12 class hours are included, based on the straight A system. The honor roll totals 157 students from the student body of the college.
Local honor roll lists include Postville Kathleen Amundson a senior with a 2.71 average and daughter of Almer and Mary Amundson of Postville. Wadena Carl Erickson a sophomore with a 2.81 average is son of Jack and Mary Erickson of Wadena.
Extension Service calendar lists 4-H Club meetings at various dates. Highlights include Wadena Wonder Workers on Saturday March 9, Putnam Foremost at 800 p.m. Lamont school, March 11 4-H Committee and Garden meetings, and March 15 Swine association at 1 15 p.m. at the Extension office.
Clayton County Extension Calendar lists events from March 7 to March 14 including Poultry Short Course at Bayless Hotel Elkader Cotton Dress workshops in Strawberry Point Monona Oelwein and Ames meetings plus 4-H activities Central Community Gym Elkader and others with staff attendance noted.
A cotton dress making workshop is set for Friday in Strawberry Point with a focus on crafting and sewing skills. Participants will learn basic techniques and take home a finished garment.
The Fayette County Barracks and Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of World War I hold a regular meeting at the Elgin Legion hall on Sunday March 0 with a picnic dinner at 12 30 pm and the business meetings to follow. All World War I veterans and wives are invited whether members or not to attend and enjoy time with old friends.
Ida Ruth Jacob Grether born November 24 1874 in Elgin died February 26 1983 in Duluth Minnesota aged 88. She joined the Elgin Baptist Church in 1888 remained a member 75 years. She married Hans Emanuel Grether March 8 1899 first couple married in the present church building. Survivors include son Leo and four daughters, plus six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 PM in the First Baptist Church with burial in Elgin cemetery.

The Echo reports the death of Mrs. Minniola Woolstein aged 75. No date or place stated but likely Minnesota. Former Elgin girl adopted by the Hawleys who ran a local lumber yard. Married in Elgin in April 1908. Survived by husband a niece and a nephew.
Mr and Mrs Martin Wenger and Stan hosted a Sunday dinner in Elgin. Guests included Mr and Mrs Elmer Meyer James David and Mr and Mrs Harry Cline Michael Jeffrey and Stacey. Further hosts were Mr and Mrs Lane Ash Mark and David for Mr and Mrs Her.
Numerous residents from Cedar Falls Postville Anamosa Elkader Manchester Davenport and West Union gathered at homes of Mosby Pulfer Schupbach and other families for weekend visits and meals. Attendees included Bert Ash Richard Wright Scott and many others with neighbors joining in Saturday and Sunday activities.
