Nora Circle met at Mrs Lyle Light's home with Mrs Mel Kohler elected chairwoman and Mrs H H Wolf secretary. Rachel Circle elected Gene Schori as chairman and appointed parsonage and sunshine committees. Mary Circle to meet Thursday with officers to be announced next week.
Twenty five Busy Beavers 4-H members attended the June 3 Girls Rally Day in Elkader with Diane Frieden as county office candidate. Lin Seeing and Seyma Hanson won blue ribbons in grooming contests, Diana Bilden aimed for dairy princess candidacy, and the club held a regular meeting at Karen Olsons on June 12 with 25 members present.
A Landsgaard reunion gathered at Elkader recreation park with a picnic dinner last Sunday. Attendees included many from Elkader Postville St Olaf and nearby towns. Committees for next year were named with Mrs Harry Leader Mrs Ol Ba Olson and Mrs Leo Fried.
Readers urge action to back the Newhberger bill and demand billboard legislation from the state and federal lawmakers. They warn future travelers will face roadside ads along interstates if senators Bourke Ene and Thomas Martin in Washington DC and representative Bromwell do not vote in favor. The letter notes the state legislature failed to pass a qualifying billboard measure for a potential 40 percent bonus.
The bill aims to grant two more years for states to qualify for a highway construction bonus. If defeated, the billboard industry could lose a multibillion dollar impact, risking highway aesthetics funded by taxpayers. The note urges resisting anything that harms the land’s beauty.
Gail Light and Wanda Lembke led a bake and stir custard session with a yeast workshop. Mrs Light and Mrs Martin prepared dough while girls shaped and baked. Volunteers incl Gayle Kleppe Patti Johnson Sally Stephenson and others. They aimed for a bake sale raising 7.36 dollars.
A Gehring reunion was held on June 17 at Mrs. Elizabeth Schneider’s home. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Wm Beer and daughters of Aledo, Mr. and Mrs. Massner and Cindy Wapello, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Willett and Michael and Mitchell of Cedar Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gehring and Bradley, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gehring, Norma and Edith, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Van Sickle, Gerald Gehring, Mrs. Tom Meighan and Bilty family of Sumner, the Laverne and Jacob Schneier families, Ervin Metzger family, Mrs. George Butikofer, Arthur and Marie Sanwian and Elia Gehring.
A Sunday family picnic dinner was hosted at Mrs. Grace Guritz home in Sumner for guests Mr and Mrs Howard Holl way, Judy and Russell of Seattle Washington.
Mrs. Alfred Ruckache? Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ruckdashel and family, Mr. and Mrs. Guernisey Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Ruckdashel hosted seventy four guests. The Guernsey Smiths stopped at West Union en route home and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hadry Olesen.
Local brief notes list visitors and social events around Elgin. Karen Hoopman and others visited, Clara Baumgartner and Anna Schupbach hosted and traveled guests, Dr. John Foster and Ethan of Elmherst joined a Frieden family gathering, and many others shared dinners or hospital stays across towns including Lake Okoboji, Guttenberg, and Racine with various hosts and family groups.
Illyria Clipperettes 4-H met at Illyria Church on June 14 with hostesses Iva Feller and Iantha Strong. President Annette Meyer called the meeting to order. 23 members attended and seven mothers were present. Tantha Strong gave the secretary’s report as the group discussed a tour to Winona Minnesota and a bake sale. Talks on Good Salads and Milk in Our Diet were given by Lynnette Schori and Janice Friederich.
A large list of relatives and friends from West Union Cedar Rapids and nearby towns spent time with William Boyle and other households. Visitors included the Nuttings Gehrings and Boyles plus several Johnsons, Martins and Cooleys as well as local residents at the Good Samaritan Home.
Mr and Mrs H Robbins and Mrs THOS Ogle hosted dinner guests Monday including Mr and Mrs Arthur Kelly of Hawkeye Ralph Blunter of Lacon and other friends in Higgin and vicinity. Wayne Gilson David and Me pen Mrs were also present.
