Clayton district enters the national contest for the 1961 62 year with a thesis based score on district duties. Non partisan judging will pick Iowa’s top district and one governing body member earns a paid vacation to Goodyear’s Wigwam Ranch in Arizona in 1962. District officials listed include Wayland Frederick Oscar Pufahl Eldon Kruse Robert Corlett Bernard Hanson and others.
Car Perry R. Wood of Creston escaped injuries after his car left the road, crashed through guard rails, and hung over the edge of an embankment.
Iowa farmers enrolled in the emergency feed grain plan to curb surpluses will cut 2,929,352 acres of corn and grain sorghum in 1961 from the 1969-60 average. About 108,112 farms, roughly 60 percent of state feed grain farms, signed up by June 1. Fayette County signed up 49 percent with 1351 farms, diverting 41,671 acres.
Reports allege Salvation Army soliciting cash contributions in Fayette county contrary to United Fund agreements. Exceptions cited for War Cry sales and pickups. The Fayette Unified Fund was advised to contact the town marshal or sheriff and Des Moines headquarters to reverse charges and address the issue.
County Extension Director M C Wangsness warns stable fly populations are rising and threaten milk and meat production. Iowa State University entomologist Harold Gunderson endorses sanitation plus chemicals, starting with removing 40 percent manure and spoiled materials from barns, then applying malathion or Diazinon outside. Chemical effectiveness wanes in three days, so reapply as needed, and use pyrenthrin repellents daily on cattle. Stable flies are gray and similar in size to house flies but have a long sucking beak.
