The Elgin Echo Dial in Elgin Iowa shows its second class mail entry dated September 1 1891 at the Fayette County post office, under the 1852 act.
From the Echo files of 1925 a home talent play A Little Clodhopper is set for January 30 at the Elgin opera house directed by Mrs. C. M. Green. Geo. Falk named postmaster in Elgin. T. J. Capper retires after ten years. Capper Hatchery adds incubators for the 1925 season. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Chapman celebrate 58th anniversary. Capper family to Eldon for a spell. Max Thomas store offers 50 pairs of Glover overalls at 1.25.
Visitors at the Bedford Times Press viewed a three pound Bondedosa lemon from Florida brought by John Von Oesen. The single fruit could yield about 12 lemon pies. In Eldora first grade two new pupils arrived, Helde and Haede Asu, ages 14 and 11, Estonian refugees who do not yet speak English and will be advanced as they qualify.
Rev Geo Snyder writes to the Echo from Des Moines praising the paper and sharing family news. He and wife recently vacationed in Tampa Florida, prefer Iowa but praise Florida’s climate. He notes the death of Chas Feller, recalls church ties at Easton Place with renovations costing over 6000 dollars, and mentions Snyder family in Iowa and Elgin visits.
The Trail Seekers met at Mrs Robinsons home with Camp Fire Law recited and roll call. Nut cups were prepared for a February 4 birthday party. Wood Gatherers met January 18 at the schoolhouse to discuss headband designs and heard from Mrs Falk. Miss Dennler demonstrated hair styling and makeup tips at Eva Maes beauty shop. a gift was presented in thanks.

Magdalena Kern Schricker, born May 5 1867 near Elgin, lived on a Kern hill farm, later Elgin resident, married Jacob F Schricker in Aug 1895. Survived by daughter Hulda Larson, grandson, and relatives. Died Jan 21 1949 at 82. Funeral Jan 24 at Muehlethaler Funeral Home. Card of Thanks from family.
Grand Meadow News reports a busy social stretch with visits to Anton Skaren and Mellien Loftggard homes, dinners at Andrew Reinhart and Joe Baker residences, and gatherings involving Erickson, Lyngan, Halverson, Nesvick, Blockhus, Thorson, Olson, and Larson families across Northwood Clermont Decorah Osian and Decorah areas. Doris Johnson and Darlene Olson are noted for recent activities.
Conservation officers Harold Johnson and crew nabbed a pheasant in a trailer park after discovering it had been illegally shot in the state park. Later, Ralph Young learned his four year old cousin Richard Young died from tractor injuries, and his brother-in-law Darrel Argotsinger lost an arm and a leg after contact with a hot wire on an REA line.
The Fayette county American Legion Auxiliary organized a January birthday party for veterans at the state hospital in Independence. About 250 patients attended a 2 PM chapel event, with 87 veterans, entertainment by Clermont and Elgin units, and a lunch of pie and coffee. Seventeen Auxiliary members toured the hospital afterward, and the group plans more entertainment to aid patients.
A 170 acre Van Buren County farm, long held by the Bennett family since before 1850, has been sold to J. F. Dunshea after more than a century in the possession of Elmus, John and Walter Bennett.
Mr. John Kelly of Woodward presented a hand-made good luck horse shoe to the president about eighteen months ago and recently received a letter of thanks for the gift.
