The Elgin Echo Dial from 3711 Elgin Iowa notes its weekly publication by Hermen and Bartunek. It records charter entry date September 1, 1891, as a second class mail newspaper in Fayette County Iowa under the 1852 act.
Seventh grade math covered a semester test across all topics. Science 7 explored elements and compounds with element symbols and a Friday test. Home Ec 7 made cream sauce for future cream of potato soup. Eighth grade Science reviewed heat, with thorough prep for new students in CVP.
Dan Butikofer son of Jacob and Anna Marti Butikofer was born February 25 1880 and died December 30 at Palmer Memorial Hospital West Union aged 2. He married Celia Frieden in 1912 and survived by his wife nine children one brother Will of Quincy Illinois and many relatives. Funeral services were held January 2 at the Apostolic Church with three clergy assistance and pallbearers nephews of the deceased. Muehlethaler Funeral Home handled arrangements. A Willing Workers Club gathering at the One Gas home on December 29 hosted by Mr and Mrs Corrine Rypestol and others. Guests included Mr and Mrs Harold Opland, Mr and Mrs Kenneth Kjosa, Mr and Mrs Lawrence West, Mr and Mrs Mervin Anderson, Mr and Mrs Marvin Staake, Mr and Mrs Louie Reierson, Mr and Mrs Cornelius Reier son, Mrs Millard Gisleson, Milo Gisleson, and Kathleen Gisleson. Progressive Somerset furnished the entertainment and three pixie lunch followed.
Adolph Elvers of Elkader outlines expected clashes in the Iowa Senate beginning January 14 1963. He cites property tax relief via more state aid to schools liquor by the drink reapportionment the Shaff plan bovine brucellosis and the Public Employees Retirement System. He says cities gain home rule but the 30 mill levy limit stays and Sunday shopping bills unlikely to pass.
A 1961 Iowa 56th General Assembly message from a Clayton County senator announcing the creation of the 40th District by district reorganization. He notes he will be the first senator from the district and expresses commitment to serving the people, inviting correspondence during the session.
Monday to Friday hot lunch menus include goulash with sides, chicken rice casserole, maidrites, turkey dressing, tuna noodle casserole and more with milk. Valley Tigers thumped Waukon 61 to 36 at Waukon on Wednesday Jan 2. Larry Halverson scored 42, widening a 14 point edge to 28 and lifting Valley into a tie for second in the Upper Wa Conference. Waukon’s Larry Nolting led visitors with 14.
The Social Hour Club met at the home of Mrs. Mationie Bede Wednesday evening January 2. With the president absent, vice president Mrs. Earl Kiple led by repeating the club motto. Eighteen members answered roll call with plans for a 25th hour. Officers were elected: President Mrs Herbert Ash, Vice president Mrs Virgil Torson, Secretary and Treasurer Mrs Melbert Meyer, Reporter Mrs Leonard Heins.
Mrs Louis Becker Mrs Cleve Bennett Mrs Vi Miles and Mrs Her ed hosted a Take away Bingo event. The hostess served. The February meeting will be with Mrs Orran Bane on Feb.
Elgin residents share New Year visits and family gatherings with Emil and RoseAnn Schneider, the Tomshecks, and the Anderson, Lehman, Heins and Hogan families. Guests included Edna Greener of Manchester, Clara Baumgartner, Doyle Baker, Joe Brackin, Canton’s Donald Kleiebore, and many relatives from Elkader to West Union.
West Union and area residents hosted relatives and friends from Oelwein Guttenberg Quincy Kahoka and nearby towns. Overnight and weekend visits stretched across December 29 to New Year’s Eve with multiple households sharing meals and hospitality at the homes of the Boyles Leamans Petersons Martins and other families.
