Astronomical Doctor Fees Stir Debate Across Wealthy Patients
A late 19th century discussion records how prominent physicians billed estates of rich clients. It cites Christopher Magee of Pittsburg paying 180000 for attendance, Samuel J. Tilden's doctor at 143000, Jay Gould's $16000, and others. The piece notes protests and contrasts with aid given to the poor, and mentions Chinese practice allowing fees only if the patient recovers.
