Wayte Demon, an eighteen year old from Catlettsburg Kentucky, struck three Black miners at Eugene Dye's saloon in Davy, West Virginia on payday night. Abadi freight wreck twenty miles from Cheyenne Wyoming delays traffic ten hours. Three engines smashed. Fireman D. H. Fenton seriously hurt and head brakeman slightly injured. The freight collided with a light engine taking water. Capt. Cool Es Netter, Washington, reports. Capt. Francia A. Cook, formerly commanding Brooklyn at Santiago, is improved but not yet fully recovered from a serious stomach and heart illness.
A four story Union block building was destroyed by fire yesterday causing about 175000 dollars in losses. Insurance covers about 100000 dollars. A freeman was injured by a falling wall but is expected to recover.
San Antonio Texas December 24 A devastating blaze and collapse of the Yacatecas Mexico city market house killed about forty five people and injured many more. The fire destroyed a large storage basement and weakly built upper floors trapping workers and minor officials amid cries for mercy as rescuers struggled with limited water and primitive methods. Bodies were recovered slowly with many remain buried as the ruins are cleared over days.
From Dubois Pennsylvania four members of farmer John Ashbaugh’s family were burned to death in an early morning house fire about three miles from Summerville Jefferson County. One member is so badly burned recovery is doubtful and four others severely burned or injured. Mrs Ashbaugh escaped by leaping from a second floor window with serious injuries. The fire is blamed on an overheated stove or slave.
James Cummings, a machinist from 156 North Ninth Street Williamsburg, was sentenced to six months in Kings County Penitentiary for brutal assault on his wife Sarah Cummings who was dying of consumption. A Dr OConnor note said the woman had only a few fingers to live. Magistrate O'Reilly branded him a dirty scoundrel and a disgrace to the community.
Berlin December 24 A German paper publishes stats on Europe’s fastest trains. France records an average speed near 8 miles an hour, Wayland and others follow with 1& miles, Germany 1% and Belgium 4%. Figures apply only to the fastest trains.
