Bandstand Dedication Highlights Elgin Homecoming

Elgin High School bandmaster Leo Grether thanked the community for supporting the new bandstand built for the 60 member band that plays the summer concert series. The event featured home talent, local impersonations, the Elgin Swiss Band, and appearances by outside groups from Postville, Oelwein, Fayette, Clermont, and West Union as Elgin marked 28 years of homecomings with changes and renewed local pride.

Homecoming Parade Winners Named At Elgin Event

Parade winners were announced at the band stand with Grand prize Karolee Lehman crowned Miss Elgin. Humorous winners included Three Bears, Steven Susan and Janis Aanes, while Hill Billies team members Larry, Barry and Gary Yack earned second place. Patriotic honors went to David Kiple as Uncle Sam, with Vickie Habeger second.

Bachman Pfister wedding in East Clermont Lutheran Church

Psychologist Appointed for Four County School System

Dwight Miller of Omaha has been named psychologist for Fayette, Howard, Winneshiek and Allamakee counties. County Superintendent A S Morse notes Miller has summer clinic and teaching experience at the University of Omaha and will fill a new role in the four county setup. Previously one psychologist served 21 counties including Fayette.

Girls 4 H Show at County Fair Highlights Demonstrations

Seventeen girls from 4 H clubs exhibit sixteen items each in the Exhibit Hall with booths in white red and blue classes judged by category. Demonstrations were held from Tuesday August 23 and Wednesday Demonstration Day featured senior and junior talks on Quick Rolls A Nutritious Meal in Minutes Brownies in Jiffy Made of Milk and Mighty Good Cookies and more with noted helpers from Pleasant Valley Clermont Putnam and Wadea clubs.

Marion Mission Society Meeting at Decorah Open House Invite

The Marionere Society met on Tuesday August 16 with hostesses Mrs Harvey Anderson and Mrs Robert Wettleson. Devor tions were led by Mrs Cornelius Reierson and readings by several members. A vocal duet and a Reierson poem were presented. An invitation to the Missionary Home open house at Decorah was extended with donations requested and a birthday song for three members.

First Prosecution Under 1955 Egg Grading Law Fined

The Iowa Department of Agriculture reports the first prosecution under the 1955 egg grading act. Clyde Spry says Joe Naiseh of Warehouse Market Burlington paid a $25 fine in municipal court for failing to candle and grade eggs. The act, under legal challenge, was temporarily restrained by the Polk County court until the Iowa Supreme Court lifted the injunction. The law requires all producer to retailer egg sales to be graded.

Schneider Reunion Held Sunday in Elgin City Park

The first Schneider reunion was held Sunday, Aug. 21, in the Elgin city park with 152 members and several guests present. A brief program featured the Elgin Hot Shots, songs by Ione Nyborg and Joan Odegard, and the Gehring quartet. Attendees included Ed Sauder and Francis Schneider of Heron Lake Minnesota, Lester Marti and Karen Bern of Kansas, Eli Sutter and the Sutter family.
