Iowa dairy tax boost eyed to fund promotion drive

Producers meeting in September will consider adding a half-cent per pound butterfat levy to the existing one-cent tax. The proposed addition would push yearly funds to over 1 million dollars, with most from May and June sales. The Iowa Dairy Association supports the plan, while the Iowa Dairy Industry Commission manages the current funds used for research and advertising. The plan aims to broaden promotions and find new uses and markets for dairy products. Also noted is slower than expected sales of colored oleomargarine since legalization, with butter sales near normal.
