Elgin Echo of Elgin Iowa lists contact dial number 3711 and announces weekly publication every Wednesday. The paper is published by Hermen and Bartuner and entered as second class mail matter September 1 1891 at the Fayette County Iowa post office under the 1852 act.
Alice Boyer was named salutatorian at commencement exercises on Friday evening August 10 in the McKinstry Junior High auditorium, Waterloo. She posted a 3.46 GPA for the Waterloo School of Practical Nursing year, with a 12 month course completed and eligibility to sit the state board exams in September in Des Moines. Boyer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Boyer of West Union, will join Palmer Memorial Hospital staff in She.
Dale Fogle informs ECHO that football practice begins August 23 at 4 pm for all junior varsity and varsity players at Valley High. All boys interested should be there on time.
The P. V. Sharpshooters met August 6 at Mary Ann and David Metzger home. Members submitted health papers and entry blanks and discussed fair plans. Three guests from Chenoa Illinois, David, Sue, and Sally Harrs attended. Lunch was by Mrs Metzger. Next meeting planned at Jimmy Butikofer's on September 7.
Illyria 4-H Livestock Club held meetings at the Illyria Church on July 2 and August 6. W. V. Beaulieu of Indian Head, Sask taught on Canadian 4-H. Randy Miles presided at the August session with fair entries paid and a barbecue lunch provided by the leader.
Notice from Fayette County Iowa District Court of hearing August 27, 1962 on the purported last will and testament of Lillie Mattoon of West Union. Clerk Herbert D. Klammer dated August 10, 1962.
The recipe directs melting chocolate and margarine, dissolving sugar in hot water, mixing with chocolate, cooling, then adding eggs buttermilk flour soda vanilla. Bake 45 minutes at 350 in a greased pan, then frost with preferred frosting. Submitted by Mrs. Lulu Schmid.
Alma Faye Briley and Owen J Nickels wed at Immanuel Baptist Church Muskogee Oklahoma officiated by Dr C E Henson. Attendants include Margie Sue Briley maid of honor and Joe Olson best man. Out of town guests include Nickels Olson Briley and Sparks families from Arkansas Iowa and Georgia.
The Lehman reunion was held at Elgin Park with a picnic dinner. Attendants included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lehman of La Porte City, Mrs. Edith Berg, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Anderson of Waterloo, Louise Schori, Ms. Charles Koch and Charles Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. John Lyford, Mr. Vernon, Mrs. Bertha Lehman, Mrs. Clara Baumgartner, Mr. and Mrs. Max Lehman, Mrs. and Mrs. Louis Lehman, Anita, and Mrs. Cornelia Burrow and Mrs. Lulu Schmid.
Mrs. Lillie Steeler Mattoon born in Elgin September 1, 1866, married Dr. L B Mattoon November 14, 1888. He died in 1902. She moved to Hill City South Dakota in 1927 to be with daughter, Mrs. Neil Koevenig, died August 4 at age 95. Funeral held at Muehlethaler in Elgin with burial in family lot. Survived by daughter, two grandsons Eugene Koevenig and Warren Mattoon, granddaughter Mrs George Brewster, other great grandchildren. Last surviving member of the George Stoehr family.
The Willing Workers Club met Tuesday evening August 7 at Mrs Christine Rypestols home. A social hour was held and Som-A-Set was played. One birthday was observed. Guests included Mrs Carroll Klingman Jr Cortine Rypestol and Denise Anderson. The town council election notice outlines polling at City Hall from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on election day.
