Clermont urges a $210 quota to support cancer research and aid. The appeal highlights cancer’s toll of about 6005 deaths in the county last year and notes a third of those could be cured with early diagnosis and treatment. Funds have already supported the State University of Town for this work.
The Clermont Junior Study Club met Thursday evening April 23 at Ardis Dibble's home with 16 members present. Mrs Art Amundson appointed the program committee: Maris Carman Swenson, Keith Thomas, and Reuben Steffens. Mrs Ray Tomgheck presented on defense mobilization. Mrs Danny Rounds reported on the Clubwoman. Mrs Steffens delivered a paper on The Children's Hour.
John Jacobson of Charles City was driving near Clermont when a large pheasant struck the windshield, breaking it and flying into the cab. The bird shattered the back window and caused slight cuts to Jacobson though a passenger avoided serious injury.
The canasta club hosted a Tuesday afternoon surprise party for Mrs Vernt Engle to mark her birthday. After games, the group served a picnic lunch and presented a memory gift to Mrs Engle. Mrs Marion Olson and Carol of Monona visited friends in Clermont Tuesday afternoon.

Miss Evelyn Phyllis Allison of Hyde Park New York an Hastert Airlines hostess died in a city hospital forty five minutes after her car collided with another at an intersection Thursday morning. She was engaged to Oscar Hanson former Clermont resident now in Davenport. Hanson left Moline airport by plane the same day to Hyde Park for the funeral.
Mrs Dave Jacobin attended the funeral of her uncle Joe Eide at Qisian on Wednesday. Also attending were the Ben Wedo family and Mrs Ida Wedo of Cedar Rapids.
Senior English reports highlight a successful Ramona class play staged Tuesday April 21 with a post performance party in the home economics room hosted by Mr. Mooge, Mr. Thomas, and Mrs. Meskel. Hamburgers and chocolate sundaes were enjoyed as students study light, humor, tenancy laws, and typing speed.
CHS junior class and sponsor Mrs Meskel spent Tuesday evening at Ilo Mae Meyer’s home. They crafted decorations for the upcoming junior senior banquet while discussing Observing and Describing. Other notes cover history topics on fascism and communism and aut biography projects for the freshman class. Clermont defeated Hawkeye 12 to 5 in a baseball game with a home run by Bill Swenson.
Nesset daughter of Rev Nesset and Dean Kittleson wed in a candle light ceremony at East Clermont Lutheran church on Friday April 24. Rev Nesset officiated assisted by Rev Knudsen with sister Alden Grinna as bridesmaid and Gerald Kittle son as best man. Attendants wore lavender and blue, reception followed, couple to reside in Postville. Ms Nesset is a nurse. Mr Kittleson works for Oscar Mayer after army service in Korea.

Ghechan Olson Unit receives a special commendation for advancing the national Am Legion Auxiliary program. The unit also earned a letter from the Glenwood State School superintendent praising its donation of scarfs hats clothing pencils costume jewelry combs and playing cards for distribution to children.
One hundred forty one ladies from Fayette county represented their clubs at the Federated Clubs county convention held at Clermont on Monday April 20. It was noted as the largest county meeting reported. Mrs M C Larson of Clermont was elected county chairman and Mrs A G Van Nordstrand of Hawkeye vice chairman. Mrs Herbert Rebasso born in Estonia spoke in national costume and gave an interesting talk. The West Clermont Priscilla Working Band served the noon luncheon.

Clermont high school hosts 20 schools on Saturday May 2 for the class D large group I music contest. Entrants include Arlington Clermont Colesburg Earlville Fairbank Farmersburg Fredericksburg Garnaville Guttenburg Hazelton Lansing Lime Springs Luana Ossian Randalia Ridgeway Stanley Volga Waterville. Seven boys glee clubs nine mixed choruses fifteen girls clubs sixteen bands compete with lunches to be served. schedule lists start times for bands mixed chorus girls and boys glee clubs across multiple venues and schools.
The church family gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tatro on Sunday evening for a picnic dinner followed by Georgana Falb of Elgin speaking about her three years as a missionary in India. She shared a movie and slides from the Calcutta girls school as guests Elmer Easler and family of Fredericksburg attended.
Mrs. Marion Hitch traveled from Brainard Minnesota after a week with her Carlin and Larson relatives. A family dinner at the Meckelson home in Decorah honored Art Meckelson on his birthday. Mrs Kathinka Larson extended her visit afterward.
Mr and Mrs Arleen Olson announce the birth of a daughter named Carla Jean born on April 12 at Postville hospital. Visiting in the John Bakewell home Thursday afternoon were Mr and Mrs Mia Joe Bakewell and Larry Bakewell of Waukon enroute home from Iowa City where Larry had been in the hospital.
The Riverside Social Club met at Mrs. Olson’s home with Mrs. Oliver Rowland assisting. They voted to donate two dollars to the Cancer Drive, held a white elephant sale at the next gathering, and awarded prizes to several members for contests. The birthday song honored Mrs. James Afferson, and the next meeting will be at Mrs. Howard Boyle’s home.
The Clermont high school boys quartet consisting of Victor Amundson, Paul Hackmann, Leland Probert and Steven Knudsen sang on a radio program aired Thursday evening April 23 featuring their vocal group.
Mrs Florence Hein went to Waterloo on Thursday, stayed overnight at the Ernest Haack home, and attended the Mutual Fire and Automobile Insurance Co district meeting. On Friday she traveled to Cedar Rapids for business, returning with Winifred Sullivan who visited relatives in Elgin, and Arthur Connor who spent the weekend with relatives in Elkader.
