J. W. Monnahan aged 83 died at his Cedar Rapids home April 20 after a monthlong illness. Born May 23, 1869 in Floyd he was the last of his father John Monnahan’s sons. Survived by his widow Catherine Krieger, a son Dale, daughters Berneice Rouse and Eva Chehak, three grandchildren Priscilla Patrick and Michael, plus many nieces and nephews. A daughter Priscilla preceded him in death. Funeral at Immaculate Conception church on April 22 with burial at Mt Calvary Cemetery.
Fayette County superintendent A. S. Morse found rural schools dropped from nearly 100 when he took office to 61. Carroll County fell from 100 to 17, with other Iowa counties reporting fewer than that. The smallest Fayette County rural school enrollment is

A three year old boy, David Muilen sbeng of Melvin, was killed instantly when a loaded .22 caliber rifle discharged while he played with it. The weapon was taken from the rafters of a shed by David and his four year old brother Garry. A second item notes Ray Gilbert in Marengo receiving a wartime letter from his son, a Chinese prisoner of war, dated December 24, 1952.
