The Elgin Echo publishes every Thursday under Strauch and Herman. The issue notes second class mail status after September 1, 1661 at Elgin Post Office, Payette County, Iowa, under Act of March 3, 1662.
Advertisement rates listed per line at 10 cents with a 30 cent weekly minimum when paid in cash. If not paid with cash, minimum is $0.00. Blind ads and inquiries cost 50 cents weekly minimum. Cards of Thanks and In Memoriam cards cost $1.00 each. Resolutions of Respect and similar notices may be charged at regular rates if admission is charged.
Last Wednesday a storm struck the John R Schmid farm now occupied by Mr and Mrs M J Blockhus causing slight damage though it narrowly missed a sleeping infant. The same week Ed Boyer and his crew finished road work at the narrows east of Elgin earning praise from local farmers.
The carnival thrilled with Miss Frieden leading 7th and 8th grades in a three ring circus and side shows. Miss Schori’s 6th and 7th graders sold handmade articles while Miss Mosby’s 3rd and 4th grades staged “The Operation.” USU trustees rejected the Mt Vernon Cornell College merger 17 to 8 with distant attendees including one from New York. Elgin rural mail carriers resumed car routes for the first time in a month, signaling a welcome change.
Florence DeSart Brubeck aged 63 died Saturday at her home 714 Olive St Yuba City California after illness She was a native of Elgin Iowa and moved to California with her parents in 1910 She married Leland S Brubeck in 1915 Survivors include husband two sons Francis and Lewis both of O Banian Corners a brother Ray DeSart of Elgin Iowa and three grandchildren She was past president of Bogue Country Club and a Grace Methodist member Funeral services 11 am Monday April 13 at Urey Memorial chapel Yuba City with Rev J Freeland Johnson officiating Interment Sutter Cemetery Attending from Cedar Rapids were Ray DeSert and son Dale who returned home last Saturday
Marie Marti Dennler was born in Hern Switzerland December 10 1872 and died April 11 at the Good Samaritan Home West Union at eighty. She married Christian Dennier May 10 1892 in Bleinbach and moved to the United States then New York farming two years before moving to Elgin in 1894. The couple had eleven children and she is survived by three sons Albert Walter Louis all of Elgin and three daughters Rose Christen Martha Chapman Elgin and Mary Pollock Volga, plus 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Linda Medberry, daughter of Mr and Mrs Glen Medberry, was a medical patient for several days at Postville hospital. Mrs Regula Yunker left the hospital and is at 240 EB 59 St Long Beach California. Lew Gruver returned home Monday after a major surgery at University hospital Iowa City on March 4.
Gruver remains weak from a prolonged hospitalization but can air, work part time, and hopes to be outdoors soon. Echo advertisers highlight merchants who can serve readers best.
Iowa feed lots on grain feed total an estimated 1,163,000 head for April. This marks the largest number for this date since estimates began in 189. The figure reflects a 20 percent rise over the prior period.
The foiled feed count marks a 6 to 20 percent increase from April 1, 1982, reaching 969,000 head, and is 24 percent above the 941,000 head on feed dated April 1, 1951.
