Elgin Echo serves Fayette County readers with weekly Elgin reporting. Published Wednesdays by Hermen and Bartunek, the paper notes its second class mail status and post office date of entry.
Chosen Sweetheart Carol Shaffer of Vinton was among ten selected from ninety to travel to Anamosa for the GBA. She was recently named sweetheart of the junior class and received a gold chain and locket inscribed Sweetheart of the Junior Class 1961.
A West Union library visit noted National Book Week as club women toured Monday evening. Librarian Mrs Dorem Meyer showcased new books and explained the library system assisted by Mrs Billya ton. Attendees included Mesdames C B Schori Max Medberry H H Wolf Martin Wenger Belva Snyder Dean DeSart Don Fauser Harry Everett Rex Mulford and Miss Gladys Feller.
Elgin Iowa council met at town hall with mayor and all councilmen. Minutes approved. Bills audited including labor, utilities, paving, salaries, and port fees. Resolution authorized sale of sewer bonds and hearing date set. Pool hall license approved for Clair and Mardella Lauer. Meeting adjourned.
Town of Elgin invites sealed bids by April 25 1861 at 7 PM for sewer improvement bonds totaling 92000 with varying maturities through 1980. Bids to show interest rate. sale to highest cash bidder. Right to reject all bids reserved. legality opinion by Des Moines firm.
At the Marion Busy Bees meeting at the homes of Diane Hanson and Darlene Hofer, members answered roll call with favorite breakfast foods. Darlene Hofer demonstrated How to make ice cream, Diane Hanson spoke on a complete breakfast menu, Diane Wenger offered Learn to write a breakfast menu, and Helen Christen gave a Good Etiquette talk. Four guests attended.
Rites were held for August Brause, a longtime West Union resident born June 21, 1888, who died April 6 at Palmer Memorial Hospital. He was a 62 year Mason, 57 year Eastern Star member, and served as school director and road superintendent. Brause helped organize the Christian church at Prain, later served as trustee and elder, and supported West Union community activities. He married Clara B. Breckin on November 14, 1889, and was one of 13 children in the Brause family.
The Sunnydale Club met March 28 with members singing My Bonnie. Roll call listed dislikes. Mrs. Mork gave a sans. Members discussed a quilt for the Good Samaritan Home in West Union. Mrs. Very offered a reading on Don’t Discard Your Flower Bulbs and led an Easter demonstration.
The annual meeting of the Duphdue mu Qa Woman's Society Kristian Service was held Tuesday April 16 at Grace Methodist Church in Oelwein.
Gowan, president of the North Iowa Conference, claimed victory in the pro dono Mosby event, extending his leadership role. The result highlights Gowan’s continued dominance in regional competition and his standing within the conference.
Mrs LaVerne Larson and children called on Mrs Olivia Olson Monday afternoon. Gary and Barbara Larson visited Ames Olson home Friday while LaVerne Larson and James joined Mr and Mrs Leonard Hoberts and sons for supper at Wadens. Friday guests at Oscar Holden’s included Mrs Dorothy Caldwell and Mrs Ruby White and Mrs Mina Holden with evening guests arriving later.
Mr Carrie Green Frances Karl and Johnny with Mr and Mrs O R Larson of West Union spent Sunday afternoon with Mr and Mrs Elmer H Larson Mr and Mrs Elmer Amund son Kathleen and Richard and their Elmer Larson family. Mrs LaVerne Larson Gary and Barbara visited in Kenneth Blockhull home Thursday. Nicholie Martie and Marlene Gary Hirde at Monotm.
