Wayland Frederick, chairman, announces Soil Stewardship Week from May 7 to 14 with Soil Stewardship Sunday on May 7. The observance, sponsored by the National Association of Soil Conservation Districts and national church groups, stresses soil as a God given resource and the duty to leave it in better condition.
The Ernest Baumgartner family hosted a birthday picnic dinner Sunday for Mrs Ida Meyer of Strawberry Point. Attendees included Mr and Mrs William Baumgartner of Oehvein, and many relatives from Clermont, including Mr and Mrs Emer Meyer and David, James. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Markend Kendal. plus Mac tin Wenger Stan and Mrs Guernsey Smith among others.
The Elgin Study Club met at the home of Mrs Rex Mulford on Tuesday April 4 with Mrs Max Medberry as co host. The session opened with an inspirational poem and included discussion of an international affairs program. Mrs R P Strauch read a short item from the program remarks, ending with a brief reading.
The report outlines the budget and purpose of the United Nations and the United States role therein. A speech by Allen Dulles is summarized, followed by notes on recognition of federated clubs by the American Cancer Society. Local appointments include Janet Gehring as a Valley High School candidate and group votes toward the town library fund.
Legal notice announced bids due April 25 1961 at 7 PM in Elgin Town Clerk's office for $28 000 sewer improvement bonds dated May 1 1961. Bonds to be sold to highest cash bidder with maturities through 1970 and callable. payments secured by special assessments.
Inland bond bids are invited for town bonds with maturities after November first 1975 and optional earlier payments. The town reserves the right to reject bids. Des Moines law firm opinion on legality accompanies printed bonds. Residents and officials listed with family and civic notices accompany the town action.

The P. V. Sharpshooters held a meeting Wednesday evening at Diana’s home. Twelve members attended and elected a new entry plan for the year. Dues were paid for the 4-H center and enrollment sheets were handed in.
A group of friends gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate the belated birthdays of Mr. and Mrs. Harl Kipie. The social evening continued with remarks and greetings as attendees enjoyed activities and fellowship.
