The Sunnydale Club gathered at Mrs. Kenneth Mork's home on March 28 with seven members and five guests. They began with Auld Lang Syne and devotions by Mrs. Mork, read an article and poems, held a soap-name game, and shared lunch. The April meeting will be hosted by Mrs. Herbert Blockhus and discuss Tales of Our Childhood.
Extension Service Calendar lists events for Friday through Monday. Good Friday closure on April 12. Illyria Clipperettes 4-H Club meets April 13. April 15 includes 4-H Home Economics Organization at 1 5 3 9 0 p.m. and Extension office. ub committee at 7 00 p.m.. Swine committee at 8 00 p.m. at Extension office. Putnam Peppy Pals 4-H Club is noted.
On Tuesday April 16 the 4-H Climatology meeting is noted for the Diligent Coverettes 4-H Club. The following night Wednesday April 17 at 8:00 pm in Fayette Iowa State University hosts the Corn Growers' meeting with E R Dun can and Lloyd Dumenil in attendance.
Clayton County Extension Calendar lists events in Elkader and Monona on Thursday April 18 and Saturday April 20. Tryouts at Elkader municipal building 10 am. Wool sewing techniques at Elkader 1 pm. beef demonstration at Elkader 1 30 pm and at Monona City Hall 1 30 pm. boat trailer schedule in the afternoon. Strawberry Point City Hall beef demonstration 1 30 pm. Elkader drawing at Guttenberg municipal building 1 30 pm. 4-H club Fulo-Pep at St Olaf hall 1 30 pm. Clover Clovers 4-H at Farm Bureau building Elkader 2 pm.
This week in seventh grade language arts students studied pronouns and prepared for a poetry unit test. Eighth grade subjects cover writing style and oral reports, with focus on bibliographies. In seventh grade math the class explored areas and perimeters of parallelograms squares and rectangles. Eighth grade algebra continues with problem solving. Home economics saw seventh graders make shrimp and onion dips and hot tuna fish sandwiches. Science reviewed last Friday’s tests and covered heart eye ear and circulatory system material. History focuses on farmers and their problems.
A new practice teacher named Jim Middendorf joins the Junior High. From Lansing, he attended Lansing public school, played baseball and basketball in high school, graduated in 1959, and pursued physical education with a history minor and driver’s training at Ulows.
Dessert recipe steps mix Nabisco wafers and butter with sugar and vanilla then layer with egg yolks and pineapple cream. Whipped cream folded with almond flavoring sits atop the first crust, finished with remaining crumbs and chilling rather than freezing. Submitted by Mrs. William Howard.
Elgin locals report Pastor and Mrs C T Fjellstul marked their wedding anniversary on Sunday March 31 with supper for their children the George Rostads Wanamingo and Allan Espeseths Byron at Hubbell House Mantorville Minnesota a historic landmark. They attended district pastoral conference in Monona on April 1 with guest speaker Prof Poovey Wartburg Seminary Dubuque. Visitors to Mrs Bettina Halverson included Mr and Mrs Arthur Nelson Sr Clermont and Mr and Mrs George Schroyer Debbie and Michael West Union, plus Mr and Mrs Robert Bemiss and Paul West Union.
Mrs Halverson visits Sunday with Mr and Mrs William Pfister. Mr and Mrs Ruel Streeter host supper Monday for Mr Pfister.
The Valley Tigers opened the baseball season with a conference win over Postville, scoring five runs on six hits with one error. Duane Koenig hit a home run for Postville, while Valley rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. Halverson and Thompson pitched for Valley, Peck took the loss for Postville.
Arlington edged Valley 5-4 in 10 innings after Dixon doubled with two outs for the winning run. Valley jumped to a 4-0 lead but Arlington tied it in the fourth with four hits and two errors. Valley pitchers Erickson Chapman Halverson and catcher Shaffer took the loss. Dixon and Thompson pitched all innings for Arlington.
Valley PTA will hold a meeting on Wednesday April 17 at 6 00 PM in Valley High School. Dr Richard Bealka a child psychiatrist from Independence Mental Hospital will speak. Bealka is a University of Minnesota graduate and director of children s services at the hospital which runs a 50 bed ward for emotionally disturbed children. Gerhard Petratzs German classes will entertain. Parents are urged to attend.
The Elgin Library announces Thursday afternoon hours from 1 to 4 pm. Two Madison township boys begin a 4-H project with identical twin calves, David and Larry Hendrickson, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hendrickson. Bambi the Christensen deer from Harlan needs a new home due to nuisance issues. A two headed Holstein calf owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tripp of Humboldt was born but unlikely to survive. A Elkader man stopped for his 50th license plate set, showing a 1913 Ford photo of his first car ownership.
Mrs Ida Polter of Gridley II stayed overnight at the home of Mrs Esther Moore last Wednesday.
