The Elgin Echo Dial, located at 3711 Elgin Iowa, is a weekly newspaper published every Wednesday by Hermen and Bartunek. It is entered as second class mail matter since September 1 1891 at the Elgin Fayette County Iowa post office.
Donald Franklin Gilson born April 18 1903 in West Union died March 27 at Postville hospital at age 59. He married Agnes Olson September 22 1930 in Caledonia Minnesota and lived in Elgin Darwin Town City and Curtis. He was a member of St Pauls Methodist Church and Silver Leaf Lodge and worked at Capper Hatchery after Central States Power and Light. He is survived by his wife Dorothy and many relatives. funeral held at St Etterton with pallbearers named and Muehlethaler Funeral Home in charge. Relatives from out of town attended and thanks extended to neighbors friends and relatives for sympathy.
Meke schedules to be in Elgin on August 2 3 and 4 for the 1963 Homecoming event. The preparations highlight local alumni gatherings and parade activities during the three day celebration.
Mrs H H Wolf leads volunteer cancer drive at Clermont Legion hall with two films on uterine cancer and radiation research. Volunteers listed include Madam William Howard Thomas Pollock Mel Kohier Lyle Light Rex Mulford Norris Capper Nelle Reusser and others. Fayette Co Chapter offers loan closet equipment for patients. State speech contest and reading honors noted for local students Maureen and Valley High competitors Janet Rothlisberger Marlene Anderson Janice Durscher Louise Butikofer Mary Metzger Karen Hilgemann.
The Pleasant Valley Farm Bureau Homemakers will meet Friday at 1:30 pm at Mrs. Edward Krueger’s home in Clermont. Mrs. Krueger will present Bias and a Washington trip report. Mrs. Lietz reports on Rural Women’s Day. Lesson on Weed and Pest Control to be given by Mrs. Jaile. Bring a gallon bottle scissors and four corks. Everyone welcome.
Valley High School senior Maureen Baldwin earned a one rating in humorous declamation at last year’s event.
The Pleasant Valley 4-H Sharpshooters Club met March 13 at the Buckdasher home. Members discussed their favorite activities and shared names associated with The Bee publication.
Mr and Mrs Harry Miller were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner at Farm Bureau Open House afternoon March 24. Della Mathys and Harry Mitl- (text truncated)
The couple married March 24, 1913 at West Union by justice of the peace Berkey. Witnesses included Min. er, the late George Miller, Mrs. Orvin Twite, Margaret Mrs. Millard Gage Donnan, Mrs. Merle Anderson, and others. They have 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. An open house was hosted by their grandchildren with rings presented by a grandchild.
The Fayette County Community Chest drive reports a past quota of 2000 for cancer research but the American Cancer Society has repeatedly refused the amount, directing funds to University Hospitals. Four years ago the Society advised the budget committee on desired contributions, yet no change occurred. It argues past cancer drives existed and literature distribution was uneven. The 12 quot or 1600 dollar share is proposed if donors wish to contribute to research, with a 90 percent allocation to University Hospitals and 100 percent from the Fayette County Fund Drive for local clubs.
