Rotational Grazing Benefits in Pasture Management
Rotational grazing can raise carrying capacity versus continuous grazing. This mid dle plan between feeding fresh forage seeks improved pasture use and sustained forage supply for livestock.
Rotational grazing cuts labor and forage losses in cattle feed
Iowa State agronomist J M Scholl notes drylot and continuous grazing with rotational grazing reduce daily feeding costs and forage losses. In a southwestern Iowa trial, Hereford steers on first-year brome alfalfa produced 202 pounds beef per acre in 66 days, with average gains of 1.73 pounds daily. Cattle were moved every 4 to 7 days as pasture grew, but risk of staying too long on one pasture existed. High quality forage was essential for best results.
