Radcliffe semi pros defeat Nevada 5-0 as Carl Neumann carries a near perfect game through eight and two thirds, surrendering a single in the eighth and a walk in the ninth. Ray Berve hits the lone homer, with Dick Klugg collecting two hits.
Women golfers from 26 Central Iowa clubs converge on Pine Lake Country Club tomorrow for the annual women’s invitational. About 80 entries are expected in the 18 and nine hole events, with near 140 women possible for the one day tournament. Defending champions from 1949 may attend. Mrs. Fred Gordon of Belmond won the 18 hole title last year with 86, and Mrs. D. H. Hyland of Traer claimed the nine hole crown with 47.
Nevada prepares for a rematch with Radcliffe after a 2-1 win earlier this season. Line score shows Radcliffe edging Nevada 5 to 2 with Barker and Evans hitting for Nevada and Neumann and D. Topp for Radcliffe.
Mr and Mrs Don Lundy left Friday for their Santa Ana California home after visiting at the Jim Bowman and Ralph Carrell residence.
Eldora junior Legion nine built two four run innings to beat Ellsworth 8 3. Le land Johns belted a third inning homer and Lamb of Eldora walked ten with five hits allowed. Eldora improved to 11 0 while Ellsworth slipped to 6 1 and 1 1.
Marathon and Vets share the league lead after Marathon’s five inning 14-4 win over Owasa. Green Farm Feeds of Conrad beat Steamboat Dairy 6-2 to climb to third. Hess hurled well for Conrad as Marathon tops the standings alongside V. F. W. A twin bill follows with Vets facing Central States and Leuthold’s meeting Wally’s at 9:30 p.m.
Ackley based Hardin Juniors travel to Marshalltown for the district Legion tourney. Managed by Vernon Arends the squad includes seven from Eldora led by pitchers Leland Johns Orlan Mitchell catcher Ted Tietz and others. They open at 1 p m against the winner of State Center Dike before a Saturday next round.
No game in Eldora Sunday due to a scheduling conflict while Eldora sought a 12th straight win. Reinbeck was listed as Eldora’s foe but played Dike on the Grundy county diamond instead.
In the Iowa high school summer sectional tournament at Hubbard the semi finals are set for 2 30 and 4 p m tomorrow Ellsworth with a bye meets the Clemens Webster City winner Hubbard Stanhope and Conrad Training School winners meet in the other semi final The final is scheduled for 4 30 p m Friday.
Whitten uncorked a 16 hit assault as Roger Peters homered and five Whitten players doubled, sparking a four run burst in the first. LeGrand scored six runs off two visiting pitchers, Hall homering in the second. Deb Gould pitched five innings for Whitten.
Don Correll of Greencastle Missouri is visiting his son Ralph Correll, visiting in the town and listed as a guest in local society notices. The relatives are spending time together in the area.
Hubbard's semi pro squad revived with a 9-2 win over Otho Sunday afternoon. Hubbard led 7-0 after one inning, added a run in fifth and sixth, while Gus Dubberke pitched all nine innings allowing eight hits and 10 strikeouts. Dubberke also drove in two runs as Hubbard totaled nine runs on nine hits. Hubbard heads to Popejoy next Sunday.
Town announces two thrill days at the Mid-Century State Fair set for August 25 and September 1. The first program on August 26 features Jimmie Lynch and a group of stunt men. the second on August 30 stars Joie Chitwood and Hollywood daredevils with more than fifteen other acts. About thirty events per program include head-on crashes, motorcycle leap frog, a car propelled 85 feet, high speed crash rolls, a human battering ram, dynamite smashups, and similar feats. Cunningham notes two rival stunt groups will compete at the fair for the first time.
