In Hardin county a Democratic central committee session re-elected Henry J. Janssen of Eldora as chairman and named Ed Wirds of Iowa Falls as vice chairman. Big Increase in Farmers Spraying for Borers
Hardin county farmers are increasingly spraying for corn borers this summer. County extension director Dick Pulse notes a rise in DDT spraying, with many using or preparing to use spray equipment. Egg Mass Count Surges in Iowa Corn Borers
Extension director Dick Pulse reports corn borer counts exceeding 600 egg masses per 100 plants in the county. Some plants show 11 egg masses and 16 borers hatched in a single whorl. He warns 50 percent destruction is possible and many fields may require spraying to avoid heavy losses. DDT sales have tripled as spray efforts rise, but Iowa can only cover about 1,000,000 of an estimated 4,000,000 acres needed.

The El Dora Kiwanis benefit horse show at the fair grounds Sunday night featured 105 horses and ponies across 10 classes. Proceeds aid crippled children. Eldora’s population fell from 3,953 in 1940 to 3,093 in 1950 a decrease of 860 and 13 percent, with the Training School census dropping from 693 to 300. Hardin county totals declined 1.5 percent from 22,530 to 22,189. Six towns showed gains led by Alden and Iowa Falls while migration to Pine Lake reduced Eldora proper counts.
