About 100 Republican delegates met in Eldora on Friday morning to select state convention delegates and district committeemen, and to endorse the report of the convention. The meeting focused on farm plan ideas and related party platform items.
Norman presides as permanent chairman A Norman of New Providence elected. Alvin Jaspers of Steamboat Rock named secretary. Clara Scourick of Ackley assistant. McGreevy introduces endorsements for judges Sherwood Clock G R Hill John M Schaupp and urges best choice for Fry’s successor. Delegates and district officials named for state and judicial conventions with multiple candidates and committeemen.
Wallace Upton bought the Wendell Balvant residence south of the Catholic rectory. Harold Creps sold his Pine Lake home to Russell Smith and recently purchased the Wasson home on Pierce Place.
Ackley pianist Henry Kramer will present Steamboat Rock piano students in a Sunday recital at 2 30 p m in the Baptist church. Guest organist Marvin Kenning of Chicago will accompany.

Republicans in convention here Friday adopted Iowa Republican Farm Policy Council recommendations from 30 farm leaders statewide. The plan calls for a bi partisanship agriculture board with state and local authority, educated soil conservation, and expansion of markets through improved merchandising methods.
Delegates selecting and adopting resolutions endorsed President Truman’s stance on the Korean situation and pledged full support of the administration farm program. The actions reflect unified backing within the party for wartime Korea policy and agricultural aid measures.
Over 90 Hardin county Democrats gathered Friday morning in the courtroom for the county convention. Henry Janssen of Eldora was named chairman with Mrs. Harold Wippman of Hubbard as secretary. Delegates were chosen for the Des Moines state convention with a half vote per person due to apportionment. Seventeen delegates were listed for the judicial and senatorial posts, and seven resolutions endorsed Korea policy, farm program support, and U.S. Savings Bonds purchases.
In Hardin county a Democratic central committee session re-elected Henry J. Janssen of Eldora as chairman and named Ed Wirds of Iowa Falls as vice chairman. Mrs. Paul Schwitters of Iowa Falls became secretary, succeeding Mrs. Murray Landon who resigned. Re-elected treasurer is Mrs. Otis Luttschwager of Buckeye. Precinct committeemen and committeewomen were appointed in four townships to fill primary gaps. The group urged harmony between President Truman and Senator Gillette and endorsed Health Unit Bill support and cooperation between agriculture and labor. They pledged full backing for Democratic candidates in the fall election.
Carl Clemons sold his El dora Sandwich Shop on Edgington avenue to Mrs. Wendell Balvant with possession given Monday. The new owner’s husband will help run the business. Clemons ran the shop about 30 years since buying it in January 1947. Mrs Balvant, formerly Ben Reece, has restaurant experience. Barbara Moser of New York visited the parental H. B. Moser home Saturday.
Hardin county farmers are increasingly spraying for corn borers this summer. County extension director Dick Pulse notes a rise in DDT spraying, with many using or preparing to use spray equipment. Many plan to spray larger areas than suggested by sprayer sales, and neighbors are being encouraged to spray others’ fields.
Extension director Dick Pulse reports corn borer counts exceeding 600 egg masses per 100 plants in the county. Some plants show 11 egg masses and 16 borers hatched in a single whorl. He warns 50 percent destruction is possible and many fields may require spraying to avoid heavy losses. DDT sales have tripled as spray efforts rise, but Iowa can only cover about 1,000,000 of an estimated 4,000,000 acres needed.
The El Dora Kiwanis benefit horse show at the fair grounds Sunday night featured 105 horses and ponies across 10 classes. Proceeds aid crippled children. Notable winner Marjory Gutfreund of Des Moines rode Born to Show to blue in the three gaited class and Moonkist Gold to English pleasure. Winners from Eldora area included Paul Witter on Cresta Blanca and Gordon Reisinger on Red Pepper. Local riders took top honors in ponies and walking horse events with multiple placements. Ring officials named and entries managed by Eastman Nuckolls.
Local Eldora groups including the Chamber of Commerce CC retail committee American Legion and VFW posts agreed to Armistice Day hours. Businesses will close 10:30 to 11:30 a m for a public service and from 6:30 p m for the Legion banquet to encourage attendance.
Ed Carney of Algona is named new owner of the grocery store formerly known as Harolds. He is expected to take over operations in the coming weeks with plans to continue service and expand offerings for local customers.
Radcliffe opens the first veterans farm training class under the G I Bill with 21 enrollees. Instructor Dayton C Bolles leads classroom and field work as ex service men study at the school building. Supt Hubert Moeller lists students including James Thompson Kenneth Skartvedt Ralph Skartvedt Calvin Skartvedt and others.
Jerry Gronwall will stay with the new owner until July 15 and will then move to California. The move signals the completion of a local business change as the new owner takes over operations.
Noel Campbell, fieldman for Hardin County Farm Bureau since January 1948, resigned effective Aug. 1 at a Bureau board meeting. He will join Western Land Roller Co. as Illinois territory representative, serving 70 counties, and will relocate with his family to Lincoln or Clinton.
The Radcliffe American Legion post set Thursday July 13 for the new memorial building dedication ceremony and dinner. Tickets go on sale in advance for the 5:30 PM dinner. Several state officers of both the Legion and Legion Auxiliary are expected to participate. the program is open to the public.
Eldora’s population fell from 3,953 in 1940 to 3,093 in 1950 a decrease of 860 and 13 percent, with the Training School census dropping from 693 to 300. Hardin county totals declined 1.5 percent from 22,530 to 22,189. Six towns showed gains led by Alden and Iowa Falls while migration to Pine Lake reduced Eldora proper counts.
Some 45 Hardin County Boy Scouts competed in a three day Junior Jamboree at Logsdon Park. Troop 315 Iowa Falls won troop competition with 358 points, Eldora second, Hubbard third, Training School fourth. Jim Hauser led camp inspection and Town Falls won target shooting.
Ralph Volk of Steamboat Rock and Marcia Ames age 21 of Eldora obtained a marriage license. George Paul Nederhoff 20 and Donna Jean Fritzel 19 from Iowa Fals also secured licenses.
