Hardin county residents begin paying 1849 taxes as the county treasurer opens receipts on Tuesday. New real estate assessments by a county assessor under a state-approved plan delayed clerical work, causing statewide delays in tax collections. Grundy county faces about a one month delay before residents can pay taxes at the courthouse.
Plainfield state senator J Kendall "Buster" Lynes seeks the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in the primary. He pledges younger, more progressive leadership and greater statewide opportunity. Lynes is well known in Hardin County and spoke at the Farm Bureau annual meeting last fall.
The annual installation of officers for Evergreen chapter Royal Arch Masons was planned for Tuesday evening with Dale Johnson to serve as high priest. Mr and Mrs Robert Benning former Cedar Rapids staff of the Grill cafe take ownership of Berrier s cafe and reopen as Kozy Inn. They will keep current hours and offer short orders meals and home made pies with counter and booth service. The family includes Leilani 6 and Alan 3. They purchased the Glankenship residence on South 15th Street.
State education officials and county nurse Evelyn Olson will survey hearing and speech in Hardin County pupils this week. Teams will visit Iowa Falls, Eldora, and Hubbard centers with audiometric testing for grades 1, 6, and 9 and speech checks for all third graders, aiming to complete pupil checks over two more years.
Information on proposed corn production limits has not reached the county PMA office and no definite details are available. PMA chairman Walter Hauser plans to attend a Des Moines conference January 5 and 6 where information may be released. The January 10 deadline stands for 1948 soil building program participants to file reports in the PMA office at Iowa Falls.
Webster City driver attempts to pass Sheriff Paul Hodgson on No 65 south of hearing list. Hodgson forced off the road to avoid collision, pursued, and spoke by car radio with Story County Sheriff in Nevada. The Hardin officer, with deputy Howard Dempsey and a prisoner, overtook the motorist and handed him over for a driving charge.
An educational meeting on mastitis prevention and high quality milk will be held in Marshalltown January 13. The extension service Iowa State College and milking equipment firms sponsor a 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. program at the coliseum with movies lectures demonstrations and personal interviews for farmers.
Elders Baptist church hosted services for Chris EB. Luhman 77 who died Thursday at Eklora hospital. Born May 7 1872 in Germany he came to America in 1880 and farmed near Hubbard. He married Helena Dreier in 1894 and is survived by wife three children six grandchildren two great grandchildren and several siblings in Germany and Langdon N.
Eldora group Alcoholics Anonymous changes its meeting night to Thursdays at 8 in the Kunath building basement clubroom. An open meeting will be held on the last Thursday of each month inviting the public. Those seeking help or information can write Box 22 Eldora.
The Elder city council postpones its regular meeting from this week to next Monday night. Officials cite scheduling conflicts and ask residents to note the new date for discussions on local matters.
Karla Jean Espe, daughter of Mr and Mrs Krofl Espe, born Monday at Eldarn Memorial Hospital, becomes the first 1950 baby weighing pounds and ounces at 9 12 p m. In contrast Alvin Chirence Tesiahl, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Tesiduht of Radcliffe, is named the last 1949 baby born in the same hospital, born December 27.

Louis Goschke 75 of Eldora died at home Sunday night. At Andrick Creps funeral home, services set for Friday at 2 pm at St. Paul Lutheran with Rev. John Aisnmermand. burial in Eldora cemetery. The Herald-Index introduces the Polaroid Land Camera to Eldora for quick, on site prints in about a minute. The device produced the Asti family image for publication, proving clear sepia prints ideal for engravings while offering speed and convenience over traditional darkroom processes.
Storms threaten to push back the planned removal of holiday decorations. Eldora Chamber of Commerce secretary Roger Ganske said Central States workers hesitated to commit as they might be needed for storm repairs if conditions worsen.

A blaze in the holiday arch near Cardes candy store at about 4340 Tuesday morning, likely caused by a wiring short, was extinguished by Al Cardes and Fire Chief Or R Lamb with chemicals. The alarm was not sounded.
The Iowa Tuberculosis and Health association reports Eldora has raised 713.05 in the first 27 days of the current Christmas Seal sale, topping last year’s 694.60. A weekend fire on South Washington Street damaged Woodrow Clemons’ car, extinguished by the fire department.
Mr and Mrs Harry DeBaggio clubhouse managers at Pine Lake Country Club are on extended leave. Rudy Zeitner becomes manager with Marie Church in charge of the kitchen assisted by Bertha Vaughn. All have been on the Country Club staff.
