Great Western Distillery Devastated by Lightning Strike
In Peoria Illinois on June 25 a fierce thunderstorm struck the Great Western distillery the world’s largest with only one exception. The south tower caught fire and flames spread through the plant forcing forty workers to flee. Firefighters opened the boiler doors then retreated as the alcohol tanks exploded. The bonded warehouse and cattle sheds were saved but the loss is estimated near half a million dollars.
