The Navy announces Commodore Watson will join Rear Admiral Sampson and form an armored squadron off the Spanish coast. Commodores Howell Schley and Watson are named to command North Atlantic fleet units with ships including the Newark Iowa Oregon Yosemite Yankee and others. The move aims to pressure Spain and influence peace talks as a blockade commander heads toward Santiago and then Spain.
The dynamite cruiser Vesuvius probed the mouth of Santiago harbor and reportedly sailed around the sunken collier Merrimac to verify the channel. Fleet observers say open water exists at both ends of the wreck, suggesting two battleships could enter abreast, one on each side.
A Paris dispatch to the Daily News reports that Spain’s hoped for explosive device is useless. The weapon requires favorable wind and is protected by compressed air with special motors, risking harm to its operators if misused.

In Tupelo Mississippi on June 27 the first section wreck of Torrey's Terrors from Cheyenne to Tampa injured several men. All injured are reported doing well. Four men from Laramie Wyoming were killed along with a Pullman porter whose body will be sent home. Only two Colorado men sustained minor wounds.
New York reports a 25 round featherweight world title bout between George Dixon and Ben Jordan at the Lenox Athletic Club arena. Jordan is viewed as Dixon’s strongest challenger in years, with Jordan having defeated Tommy White in London last November. Dixon has trained hard in Newdorp and both fighters will weigh in at 122 pounds.
The Wisconsin varsity boat crew departs this afternoon to face Cornell Columbia and Pennsylvania in the quadrangle races on Lake Saratoga. The crew, in prime condition, aims to measure up to its rivals with strong form and swing. They reach Saratoga tomorrow evening for two days of practice before Friday’s race.

Bridgers and Sierra agreed to a bet, to be settled one week from Sunday at Rand's Grove with nine railroad men chosen to face any El Paso team.
